This is the aftercare's responsibility to fix.

OP here, was just talking about this last night with DH. The aftercare provider told the parents about the change initially and they said they are trying to figure out alternatives. Ultimately it will come down to what they can work out. However, I like to think with community action MCPS would be willing to either reconsider OR not charge an arm and a leg if this is really a push to start charging for a service they currently provide in an effort to save money rather than a true capacity issue. Regardless of what happens, parents are locking in childcare arrangements now for Fall 2013. We do need to know what gets worked out sooner rather than later.

Sucks that this is true

Sucks that the same people that would complain about an increase in ESL services are probably those that are pushing for tracking and complaining about 2.0. Apparently when kids are below grade level they are contagious, but heaven forbid we provide services to help them catch up and help teachers meet their needs while still having time to teach students with more skills.

When they are illegal and shouldn't even be in the school system taking up federal tax dollars for legal kids, then yeah - heaven forbid.

Since Plyler v. Doe, in 1982, the law of the land has been that denying children an education based on their immigration status is a violation of their right under the 14th Amendment to equal protection under the law.

I recommend that you read the decision, which you can find here:http://www.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/historics/USSC_CR_0457_0202_ZO.html

We also have a federal law that says you need to go thru the legal channels and not run across a border illegally to be a US citizen but since Arizona is the only state to have the balls to uphold it, millions coming running for their free education, meals, welfare, food stos, subsidized housing and healthcare via (ER visits) every year. They are very appreciative that our increasing taxes are going towards them while they pay nothing. Soon free amnesty. We were just charged another 100k in MoCo taxes to help start their paperwork since they are too poor to pay $10-20 to do it themselves. Coddling much? Sure. Our country in debt. Sure. Who cares? Not the government. They will just tax you more as needed while education gets worse, ratios get higher and cuts increase.

Even if all of this were true, it would still not be relevant to either

1. MCPS.
2. What the OP should do about the bus to aftercare being cut.

since neither MCPS nor the OP has any control over federal immigration laws.

The right place to discuss this is the politics forum, not the MD public schools forum.

1. What is the school OP? Wyngate??

2. Contact the school board members

3. Contact your county council representative.

He/She helps fund MCPS and would likely not want your child unattended to afterschool AND WANTS YOUR FUTURE VOTE.

Also write Starr. This is completely unacceptable.

Do you have evidence that they're illegal? The vast majority of ESL kids in the elementary school where I teach are here legally.

Op here.

Yes, the school is Wyngate.

Just to give an update. The letter writing to the school board, head of the MCPS transportation department, and county council appears to have worked. There is now an alternative being offered by MCPS at least for the 2013-2014 school year.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

Do you have an aftercare provider located at school? We have one (Kids After Hours) that is fantastic and is really a core of the school community - would talking to the principal about getting one of the in school before/after care centers be an option?

And where is your evidence that they are all legal. In 2009 3/4 of illegal children in the state of Md were in Montgomery county public schools. Approx 85,000 kids. Estimated cost of 966 million dollars and an additional 250 million on ESL. That was 4 years ago!

May I ask about the alternative solution? Thanks.

OP here. The solution is to keep the schedule for the morning bus and have an afternoon bus double back to pick them up.
