For Feds -- furlough update

Anonymous
I heard FBI started at 14 dropped to 11 and is now at 9. Nary a furlough day has been taken by anyone.

[ Given that there appears to be no discussion at all happening about changing the sequester, I think it's more likely than not that someone somewhere will have a furlough day soon if it hasn't happened already.

The sequester is to last 10 years unless something is done, so sooner or later....

This is the part that scares the hell out of me. I can weather a 6 month sequester, but knowing this can't end until Congress agrees on a "real" budget?? We're all screwed.

What does a sequester lasting 10 years even mean?

Actually, EPA will have 3 fixed days that everyone has to take (May 24, July 5, and August 30). The remaining days are at your discretion subject to management approval.

They are supposedly taking the month of June to assess exactly how many furlough days need to take (taking into account any saved personnel costs between now and then from people on lwop, part time people, unfilled positions, etc).

Wow no days until the end of may- and possibly only 3 total?? I'm starting to sense a trend here...furlough is not so scary after all!

Maybe not for EPA, but we're still being told 14 and the poor DOD folks are at 20+.

Just received notification at DOJ that a final decision on the # of furloughs is on hold until mid-April.

DH works for DOJ. I just wish they'd make a decision, whatever it is, so we could plan around it.

My guess is that it will be somewhere between zero and none after all is said and done.

Can you not read? I said 3 fixed days that everyone has to take. 10 that are flexible. Everything else the pp said still holds. So 4 between April 21 and June 1, one if which has to be May 24. Then up to 9 more between July 1 and September 30. I've seen the budget numbers-they may be able to reduce by a day or two, but it's not going to go away completely.

The reason no one has taken any days yet is that the government is required to provide 30 days notice, and the unions get a certain amount if time to appeal. For us, that puts the start date at April 21. We can't count any days before that as furlough days.

So no one in any agency has taken a day yet, or they have and got their 30day notice plus whatever the union appeal time frame is (?) so letters were given in January or early Feb.? Which is it? I only know of threatened days that keep dwindling (thankfully)

I'm not sure what you don't understand. Not every agency notifies on the same day. Some notified early and have already started furloughs (see the post at 22:51). Some notified later and won't be able to start for another few weeks. Some (like Justice) notified early but are reassessing their situation in light of changes under the CR and will make a final decision about how to proceed in the upcoming month.

I have it on very reliable info that EPA's cost saving steps early this FY have left it able to get by with no or barely any furloughs, but for political reasons it has been decreed that there WILL be furloughs --- 13 days planned now, subject to revision.

Despicable political posturing, using Federal employees who (unlike me) desperately depend on a full paycheck, as pawns.

I'm disgusted and embarrassed to have voted for Obama twice.

Shame on him & the administration, as clear as it is that he Republican charlatans in Congress are even worse.

Both sides suck. Hard.
