Marshall/Pupil-placing for IB School Overview

Why is sharing information about the school "dragging it through the mud"? Is every discussion of Marshall supposed to begin and end with a Marshall parent touting the US News ranking? I think you protest too much. It seems like every other school-related post on the VA Public Schools forum lately is about Marshall, and every other post on the Real Estate forum is about Pimmit Hills, which is zoned for Marshall. I know I didn't start these threads, so perhaps you like the attention.

Is this the crazy pro- Madison anti-Marshall lady again?

Hello? People who are turning this into a "Marshall is great/Marshall sucks" debate? The OP wanted info on the IB program to help her determine if it's a good fit for her kid. You're not adding anything with this argument, so go post elsewhere.

OP, I have a son in the program at Marshall now. We highly recommend it, even if our kid doesn't get the full IB diploma. The "Theory of Knowledge" class alone was worth the price of admission. It's like an intro to philosophy class with lots of discussion, and our son loves it. The program as a whole has been challenging and I feel ithas prepared him well for college. Do email Carlota Shewchuk (say "shev-chuck"), the IB coordinator. She's a wonderful teacher, a super mentor for the IB kids, and very responsive to parents. She can give you or direct you to all the info you need. And to the poster who slammed Marshal admin for caring about scores and ratings and not kids, I can only say that has NOT been our experience.

As it turns out, it seems there is another IB information night scheduled later this month:

http://www.fcps.edu/MarshallHS/academics/ib/IB%20Spring%20Program.pdf

Maybe that will be more useful than anything else on this thread.

Our own experience with Ms. Shewchuk was that she was passionate about IB, but kind of oblivious to anything and anyone else at the school. Her intentions were good, but she was a bit spacy.

I cannot believe US World and News is so stupid to have assumed a 99% participation in the IB program. Where is it stated that they did? There isn't a 99% participation in AP classes in any high school anywhere. Why would anyone assume a 99% participation for the more demanding IB program? Absurd.

It was on the US News web site when the 2012 rankings were the latest ones. The 2013 rankings subsequently came out, and the school's ranking was based on the different assumption of a 58% IB participation rate.

According to FCPS, Marshall has over 1800 students this year, with a big freshman class. That's pretty cool, if you know that FCPS came close to shutting the school down in the early 90s and selling the valuable land near Tysons. And, unlike some schools where FCPS decided to boost the enrollment by redistricting, Marshall's boundaries have stayed the same for a long time - the additional growth is due to additional housing in the cachement area and pupil placements to the IB program.

I wonder if the school still uses the "big heart small school" moniker. At 1,800 students and growing it is becoming one of the larger FCPS high schools.

Why is every reasoned critique of Marshall a mental problem? Why so defensive? Perhaps because they are right? It is an OK school, but it is no "greatest school in Virginia and in the WHOLE US!!"

The motto was "small school, big heart." Marshall is still a long way from becoming one of the larger schools in the county, but the days when it was the smallest are over for the foreseeable future.
