I cannot believe US World and News is so stupid to have assumed a 99% participation in the IB program. Where is it stated that they did? There isn't a 99% participation in AP classes in any high school anywhere. Why would anyone assume a 99% participation for the more demanding IB program? Absurd.
It was on the US News web site when the 2012 rankings were the latest ones. The 2013 rankings subsequently came out, and the school's ranking was based on the different assumption of a 58% IB participation rate. According to FCPS, Marshall has over 1800 students this year, with a big freshman class. That's pretty cool, if you know that FCPS came close to shutting the school down in the early 90s and selling the valuable land near Tysons. And, unlike some schools where FCPS decided to boost the enrollment by redistricting, Marshall's boundaries have stayed the same for a long time - the additional growth is due to additional housing in the cachement area and pupil placements to the IB program.
I wonder if the school still uses the "big heart small school" moniker. At 1,800 students and growing it is becoming one of the larger FCPS high schools.
