Georgetown Cupcakes: Honest Review?

I, too, think Georgetown Cupcakes are dry. I prefer the cupcakes from Something Sweet on Macomb St.

I've had a lot of their cupcakes, and I can't think of any dry ones - if anything, the occasional misses have been on the side of underbaked/too wet. Generally their cake is tender but not dense. I'm guessing "tender" vs "dense" is an individual preference thing as well - I find Baked and Wired too dense and heavy.

Anyway, if you want to try GC, here are my favorites: Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip, Chocolate^2, Maple, Pumpkin Spice, Key Lime. If you want plainer, stick to the cream cheese frostings (Chocolate & Vanilla or Vanilla & Chocolate, or Vanilla^2 for crazy chocolate haters).
There is something wretched-tasting in the colored sprinkles on the "Birthday" series, which are the buttercream ones. Oh, and even though Red Velvet is hyped and I recall it was good when they first opened, then they got on the red dye train like every other cake shop and the flavor suffered. Ignore, get a Chocolate [cake] & Vanilla [cream cheese frosting] instead, it's what Red Velvet should be when not ruined by dye.

I... have devoted too much brain space to this.

Oh, and as for rudeness, I haven't encountered any at the Bethesda shop, unless you mean from customers. (Pro tip: the time to call your friend and debate flavor choices at length is *before* you get to the front of the line.)

GC is dense, not tender--what are you talking about? They are dry and dense. Very overcooked and bread-y. I have never had an undercooked or tender cupcake at Georgetown Cupcake, ever.

DH and kids like their cupcakes, but they like super sweet things anyway. I am not crazy about them and would never queue up for them.

I once tried a cup cake at Cakelove, and found it far better.

Will have to try Baked and Wired now.

GTCupcakes are pretty and there are many varieties but my kids and I don't like them as much as any variety of Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker. FTC is often dry and the frosting is too sweet with (on most flavours) bad texture. The attitude at GTC has been consistently snotty over the past 4 years, too.... In Georgetown and Berhesda.

Baked and Wired are MUCH better. Sprinkles are good, too.

Hot Breads in Kentlands are the best! I used like Sticky Fingers but Hot Breads is far better. Their eggless cupcakes are amazing.

My kids and I will gladly take GTC any day! We love cream cheese frosting (although my youngest will eat any kind) and we've never had a dry one unless we let it out on the counter at home for a couple of days. However, that is not usually an issue.

Snotty? Do you mean the kids who take your order? I have never experienced anything snotty at the Bethesda locale.

Of several cupcake places in the area, I do think they have the best tasting cake as well as frosting. They actually do fresh product which makes a difference.

I have tried Curbside (they are ok, best part is they came to me vs. Having to go to them), HelloCupcake (dry cake), and the worst was CakeLove (still frozen cake and frosting). I have also tried Incredible Edibles out in Reston. They are ok but too much of their cakes and frostings are cold and then thawed and it leads to dryness and a weird taste.

Agree! Hands down, Something Sweet are my favorite cupcakes in DC!

over-rated. dry cake, good icing and have some interesting flavors. prefer almost any other bakery to them.

I love them. Sickeningly sweet with tons of icing = fantastic. And they've always been moist when I've had them, even after sitting in the fridge.

Something Sweet rocks! They are also sold at Surfside in Glover Park and Jettie's on Foxhall. Soooo good!!

I had them at a party one time. I thought the cake was dry and the frosting was really sweet and kinda gritty.
