I couldn't have said it any better. Running is a purist sport. It's about not taking short cuts, giving it your best and tipping your hat to your fellow runners -- whether they finish ahead of you or not. It's a blacklisting offense to lie about your time. |
Fine but I don't t think losing the vote of marathon runners will really sway an election. Not a lot of people outside your sphere care, and certainly don't care as much as you do. Just like Biden saying he's a good golfer (claims a handicap of 6 but no one really believes that). It seems to matter only to golf purists. And if you throw out from the next election all the people who know their golf handicap and think Biden lies about it, I don't think the Obama/Biden ticket will suffer much. |
And you miss the point entirely. I agree. What Ryan said won't change anyone's vote. Including mine. People who don't like him will make more of it than they should, and people who do like him will not care. Personally, I don't why he feels compelled to lie. If you've got a good argument, you don't need to cook the book on facts. Yet he's launched a bunch of whoppers this week alone. |
Some of the smoothers operators I've seen in action (in high stakes court cases mostly), can lie as easily as they can tell the truth. It's really an art form. And scary. |
I agree with this. It is curious that he automatically lies about something as trivial as his time in a road race. Some people are instinctively honest, some people instinctively lie or "shade" the truth. |
Yes, what he said will change some people's votes. I was completely on the fence about Ryan, willing to like him as a person and give him a chance as a politician. This completely unnecessary lie tells me a lot about his character that undermines the nice image he tries to portray. |
So lies about golf handicap are acceptable fibs but lies about 20 yr old marathon time and I'm rethinking my vote? That's fine but not rational. |
If you put it that way, no, of course, not rational at all, and you've got a nice inflammatory conversation-stopper too. Of course, that's not what posters are actually writing. |
71 Yr old poster here.
This persistant lying, represents a seriours character flaw. He would not have secured and additional vote or lost a single vote by simply telling the truth. To complete a marathon is a major event in one's life is imprinted upon one's psyche. There was nothing to be accomplished by this lie, so the question now is why, he's got a problem with reality and that's enough to lose my vote |
But were you really considering voting for him before you heard about the marathon time? |
I agree with the poster who said completing a marathon is a significant life event. A sub three hour marathon would make you an elite runner. Four hours is still impressive. But regardless, you never forget your time and it's a really, really weird thing to lie about. This added to all the lies in his speech make me think he's a compulsive liar.
Lyin' Ryan. |
Runners are obsessed with their pace. There's no way he forgot or misremembered. He lied. |

I am a card carrying independent. Was I going to vote Republican? Most likely not, because I am; pro choice, I don't like the GOP plans for Medicare after reading AARP's evaluation and I'm totally frustrated by the House of Rep's and Senator Mitchell's total commitment to defeating Obama at all costs to the American people and the economy. Aiken's comment, and then Ryan's speech filled with glaring misrepresentations of fact were defining sealed the deal. No, I'm not voting for the Republican nominee for president. |
