3rd grade Referral--Appeal

My DC was rejected in appeal last year, with GBRS 8 and WICS 132, I don't think high WICS score overcomes the low GBRS, as 6 is very low, not to discourage you.
Just telling our case.

THanks, because I do not want waste money on a WISC, if there is absolutely no chance with a low GBRS. Was this when you applied in 3rd grade?

DC was in second grade then, this year DC made it with new GBRS of 13.

I guess it's possible that a teacher could think the child is fine is level III. But I doubt there is some conspiracy here going on. When you read the GBRS could you see how they could come up with a 6. Honestly. My DC got a 9 GBRS. When I read it I thought, oh I see what they are saying. Of course, I don't think they understand DC (was accepted 1st round because of high test scores) but I could understand theire point of view.

14:42's post shows how widely the GBRS can vary even wtih respect to the same child. Is it really the case that a child ranked 8 in displaying gifted behaviors in second grade, then suddenly is at a 13 in displaying gifted behaviors only one year later? Maybe the child had a sudden and dramatic increase in maturity, but more likely, the jump in GBRS is due to differences in the two teachers' interpretions of the GBRS form and criteria.

This is 14:42 again, yes our DC's second grade teacher was a fifth grade teacher and was expecting too much from second graders, not just us other parents in the class felt the same.
And GBRS is completely teacher(s) perspective of kids and students response/behavior completely depends on how the teacher reaches out to them.

as in our case, our DD was very demotivated in second grade as it was very tough for her to impress her high expecting teacher.
she is wonderful in 3rd grade, and her teachers' were surprised when I spoke with them about her second grade GBRS. and not being accepted into level IV.

Yes and she is in.

Instead of thinking of it as an insult, why don't you read the GBRS and maybe look at your child thru the eyes of the teacher. last year DC got a GBRS of 9. aap is more than just math

[list]actually it is my understaning it is not about math much at all. it is all about reading and writing. AAP is not all that. Don't worry about it and let your kids succeed on his own.

I think it is all a big mystery. If certain scores don't match with what they are looking for, I would consider that the problem. I believe if scores are spread widely apart and the GBRS is low ( 6) you will not get in unless you present something new, like an outstanding WISC. I would do the test, at the least it will show you where your DC has a weakness that you can work on.
The whole process is difficult, if you aren't accepted on round 1 which is why you really need to look at all the information and see if you can understand the resonaing behind the central selection committee.
