I had plastic surgery. Ask me anything.

Would you be okay with your children having surgery when they are older?

Yes, if they did it for themselves, and not to please others, and if they had a realistic view of what it could do for them.

(This sounds super snarky but it's an honest question... I would have never considered surgery before but I get it now and am trying to figure out why)

I think the risk of life-threatening complications for me, a healthy 36yo, is less than the risk of getting into an accident on the beltway. And of course it's wise to go with an experienced surgeon with a good track record. But to address the crux of your question -- yes, I did take a physical risk for aesthetic reasons. I just didn't, and couldn't, feel happy with the body I had. I guess I'm not as strong as some. I feel a lot better about my body now, and it's making me want to be a healthier, more fit person. I feel fortunate I had the means to do it.

Ironic?? because the society, culture and socio-economic class that made this possible may have also made you think what you were born with wasn't enough.

I find this strange for 2 reasons:

-You imply that poor people all must be happy with their bodies
-You assume that plastic surgery is unique to our culture and society, when in fact rates of plastic surgery are much greater on other parts of the world, in particular Central and South America, where it is accessible to people with less money than in the US. As a Colombian woman, I can assure you this is the truth. Colombian women will not run around looking like shit.

I'd also like to chime in here. I had a tummy tuck after losing a lot of weight. My stomach was literally hanging down like an apron or sack of chestnuts. It's not a matter of learning to be happy with what you have or heaping self-criticism caused by "society." Plastic surgery serves a purpose like other surgeries. A tummy tuck shores up sagging internal musculature and excess skin. It's not just vanity because you don't look like Barbie.

I had one too and completely agree. Your stomach muscles support you. My tummy tuck helped immensely with back pain.

Am thinking of doing a breast lift and tummy tuck. Can you reccomend your doctor - if he/she is in DC

I could recommend a few docs based on my consults, but they're all in NoVa (some have offices in Md too).

I got silicone. Since my revision, they feel pretty soft, but I'm not going to lie: they don't feel like the real thing.

MD works. Happy to get any recs that you have.

So how does a tummy tuck work? Do they cut skin away, to make the abdominal skin more taut? Where is the incision, is it like a c -section incision -- laterally, right above bikini line?

My doc was Frank Richards. His partner, Dean Jabs, also seems good. I also liked Mark Venturi and Andrew Goldberg (not sure if either of them have MD offices) and James French (I think he has a Chevy Chase office).

I'm sure there are a slew of other great docs in Maryland that I didn't even look at because I wanted someone in VA.

The scar is not like a c-section scar. It runs from hip bone to hip bone but is it low like a c-section scar.
