anyone have a DC who hums while they eat

I am 30 and sometimes still hum when I eat; no one has ever made fun of me for it. I never realize I'm humming unless my husband or someone else mentions it, so I'm not sure that there's anything you can do to get your daughter to stop. Like the other PPs, I seem to do it when I am happy, relaxed and like what I'm eating. I like to think it's a sweet personality quirk, not a bad habit like nose picking. Let her hum away!

I responded to this post when it was originally posted and said that my DD quit when she was about 2. I misjudged. She's four now and still does it occasionally.

My DD (8 months) has been doing it since about 5 months too. Very fervently. It's cute I think!

My girlfriend, 33, hums while eating. She doesn't seem to do it while out with others, only when we're at home. It's difficult to express how obnoxious it is...I might have some level of misophonia, but I've never before noticed anyone's eating being quite so annoying. She seems to breathe through her mouth a lot so I'm figuring she might have some inordinate difficulty breathing through her nose.

In any case, when she starts that monotonous, humming-exhaling-eating thing, I either move out of hearing range if possible, or will put on a pair of large, whole-ear headphones and blast some music to drown it out if I'm at home. Otherwise I just kinda sit there and grind my teeth & bite my tongue to get through it.

If you can curb the humming-while-eating thing, many, many people will be silently thankful for it.

My 10 yo niece has been humming and eating since she was a toddler. She's normal in every other way. Very smart, actually.

I'm a 47 year old male, fairly normal I guess, but since I can remember I've been told at times I hum/groan while eating, and also while brushing my teeth! I have no idea I'm doing it, and when my wife tells me I am, just a second ago, I don't remember hearing myself doing it. It's weird. But other than that no issues. Just a quirk I guess. It's odd that I've never heard myself do it while others around me sometimes say it's a pretty good hum.

See the movie The Switch, the lead (Jason Bateman) hums while eating!

If it is loud enough to distract from conversation at the table it is not unreasonable to ask her to stop. She may not realize she does it but WILL start to realize it as it us brought to her attention repeatedly. It isn't a tic it is a habit that can be broken.

Is she happy?

Is she healthy?

That's all that matters. For god's sake, don't teach your daughter to care about what other people think. She'll find out how awful other girls can be soon enough, just be there for her.

My DD has done this since she was about 10 months old and is now 4.5 and still occasionally does (but not nearly as often, only when its something REALLY good). The daycare teachers used to joke about it, too, because they thought it was adorable. They could also tell when she didn't like a particular school food option on any given day! It doesn't bother me at all. You need to lighten up!

However, I don't do it consciously, nor all the time, but I find that it occurs the most when it is food that I really like combined with a place or people with whom I am very comfortable, ie: I will be humming when eating food I like around my close friends at my home or their homes, but if I'm out with strangers or at a public restaurant etc. then I generally don't hum. Most of my friends find it hilarious, especially since they can call me out on it when I'm doing it and I will stop for a few minutes till I forget about it while I'm eating and start up again and then they all start laughing and I realize it again. I have heard all kinds of different explanations ranging from food releasing Dopamine in the brain, to it being a sign of schizophrenia. I don't really know what it means, but I have been doing it for this long without any negative effects, so I consider it to be mostly harmless. I don't know that this is relevant, but I have a six year old son who does not (and never has) hum while he eats, none of my other immediate family members do either, so I don't think its something that is genetic or learned behavior.

Hello,
Just wanted to let you know that I hum a tune when it is food that I really like combined with a place or people with whom I am very comfortable. AND that I have identical twin daughters that do the exact same thing. They have been humming along since they were 2 or 3 years old. I think it's definitely a genetic inheritance. Just thought I'd share that interesting fact with you.

I just found this post while looking for answers because apparently I hum while eating and I don't realize it. My husband keeps saying stuff about it and i honestly have no idea what he's talking about. If I am in fact humming while chewing without knowing it, then your daughter probably doesn't realize she's doing it either and therefore can't stop even if she wanted to. Hope this helps in some way oh and I am 33 yrs old with no psychological issues!
