Talk to me about schools in Silver Spring MD

We really like Flora Singer. Oakland Terrace was ok too, though we prefer Singer.

PP's translated warning about East Silver Spring: "Eeek! Run! Too many black, brown, and poor kids." The school is actually lovely, newly renovated, with a good PTA, and smaller class sizes.

People who live in Woodmoor rave about Montgomery knolls and prince crest (k-2and 3-5 respectively).

Another vote for Forest Knolls (in 20901)! Great school and community, with a nice quasi-magnet program called Junior Press Corps that offers once-a-week classes in writing and photography for 1st through 5th graders. Older kids produce a daily radio broadcast and monthly TV broadcast.

I'm glad to see such positivity towards Flora Singer, that's where we'll be sending our DC in a few years! Our neighbors seem to like it too. But WTH is up with Sligo Middle? Lots of negative reviews on Great Schools and we know very few people who actually sent their kids there (either went private or magnet for MS). Seeing as we literally have 10 yrs before DC would attend, so I'm hoping things will improve between now and then. Most of the feeder ES seem good, so it's a bit odd.

We are at Flora Singer. Two of the feeder schools to Sligo are strong and two aren't. More people from my neighborhood are sending to Sligo. I think that there is a good chance of improvement.

Sligo will have a new principal this fall and there are recent efforts to improve the school. I think having Flora Singer as a new feeder school should also help, since it seems like there are a lot of engaged parents at the school.

Just out of curiosity, have the feeder schools/neighborhoods into Sligo changed? From what I gather current Flora Singer students were previously sent to OTES. Where did they go after that? Still Sligo or was it Newport Mill? Just trying to figure out whether its the same neighborhoods feeding into Sligo as before, just a new ES, or whether the zoning boundaries changed.

Yes, there is a boundary change for Sligo that will go into effect for kids entering 6th grade in 2014-15 (I think).
In the past, OTES had split articulation between Newport Mill and Sligo, with most kids going to Newport Mill. Now all of OTES will go to Newport Mill and all of Flora Singer will go to Sligo. (So some neighborhoods that feed to Flora Singer used to feed to Newport Mill and will now feed to Sligo.)

It is some new neighborhoods- the ones near Flora Singer that used to go to Newport Mill. Now, all students who go to Flora Singer go to Sligo (unless they go to a magnet or choice middle school program).

At Montgomery Knolls, more than a dozen teachers left this year. As a matter of fact, even now, a few teachers are trying to transfer out, applying to places further away from home.

Schools have climate survey every year.
Highland View teachers gave very high marks both to the school, as a place to work, and to the administration, for supporting and treating them with respect and dignity.

And what most of the parents at MK would tell you is the school is much stronger as a result.

who are you and why do you keep posting about teachers leaving MK? Were you a crony of the former principal who ran all the good teachers out? You clearly have an agenda. PARENTS with students at MKES are very happy with the school. Sorry that you are not.

+1 happy with MKES. Small class sizes and great teachers for our DC so far, after 2 years, reading way above grade level and enjoying school. Sorry so many teachers are leaving, but it seems for a variety of reasons and that they like the new principal.
