| My titties are toughened. Lol. |
Now there's something to think about..... |
Bitter much? |
The problem on DCUM is that everybody thinks s/he's smart/knowledgeable/right. Nobody thinks he or she is stupid/ignorant/fatuous. Including you, I'm sure. DCUM doesn't have an unbiased, automatic, computerized ratings system to decide who's smart and who's dumb. So the power of judgment devolves down to people like you, and for all we know, you might be more stupid/ignorant/fatuous than everyone else. Also, there's a fine line between "stupid" and "has a different opinion from me." I'm not sure you, or most posters here, can tell the difference. |
| The people who are so bitter and cruel on these boards must feel very powerless in their "real" lives. Why else would they engage in the virtual smack-down of total strangers? Something to think about. If you think a question is inane, don't open the thread. It is just that simple. Keep the hatefulness to yourself. |
|
Other factors have been mentioned, but the absence of screen names and moderators greatly exacerbates the problem. Even if your name is just "person518," you might be less inclined to mouth off and develop long-term enemies, and you'll certainly be less inclined if you might be banned.
It's always been interesting to me that some people here think that this is a universal internet phenomenon. There are many forums in which almost everyone is civil, if not always kind. |
ManWithA: are you feeling ok? I just noticed an erroneous "it's" on another post of yours. And the above statement doesn't seem to make sense as it's written or in the context of the thread. I'm just confused: "this" lacks proper antecedent basis and if something is "universal" it's not a "phenomenon"; right? Still way above average, but not your usual top form. Please explain. |
Look at the high expectations I've earned through use of a username. 1) "It's" here is a contraction of "it has." You'll have to point me to the other one, but check yourself first, smartypants. 2) I think the antecedent basis requirement is overemphasized. I think it's only a problem if there are multiple possible antecedents, e.g.: "Mary and Jane will be there. I think it's her birthday." I was probably a little looser here than I would be in some contexts, but I don't think that anyone would miss my reference. 3) Re "phenomenon," are you thinking of it in the sense of "phenomenal?" I don't think that usage is the most common one; both dictionaries I checked list it third. Typically, I just use it to mean "occurrence." BTW, if my grammar is good here, it's mostly from habit. I don't promise or expect perfection in this context. I've noticed more mistakes in my posts here than in other contexts, probably because I'm ranting so often. You're bound to catch me if you keep trying. |
| ManWithA: Maybe it's just me. Most times I think you're spot on. Sometimes I feel like I interrupted a conversation you were having with yourself. |
Sounds about right. If only 10% of things I've said here are crazy, that's still a pretty big number. |
| It's just like life, some people are nice, some are mean. At least here, you don't HAVE to read the nasty stuff. |
| Welcome to Obama's America. |
Now I have visions of Genghis Khan talking to his riders. That, and gladiators. I probably deserve time in hell for asking my 4 y/o DD if she liked gladiator movies (this was asked before the jousting stuff at the Renaissance Fair.) |

Sparing you the word play, there are an awful lo of p*ssed off people here, OP. Hadn't you noticed? It is true in person and moreso here. It is tiresome. You just have to avoid them. Their problems are not my problems. Seriously, if my employees had that big an attitude they would be gone. |
