Question to 16:23: how long would the commute to metro ctr be from that 5bed you describe? Leaving home around 8:45? Not to be snarky but I live in Friendship Heights in a so-called overpriced house and it takes me 30min door to door. To me, priceless.

Bottom line is a lot of those shacks are over priced. Ever heard of work from home.

Not overpriced, just tradeoffs and differences in preferences...

Agree with this. Vienna to Metro Center leaving at 8:45 is likely to take @75 minutes.

Whether you're prepared to accept another 45 minutes commuting for more space and better public schools is a matter of personal choice. Both are legitimate, and neither is "priceless."

OP said Penn Quarter/Metro Center, and the Red Line would get her to Metro Center.

I would look at Brightwood, 16th st heights, Mount Pleasant and Glover Park. Screw the suburbs.

FYI metroing from Vienna to Metro Center leaving at 8:45 wouldn't be possible unless you bought a reserved parking space or didn't need to park at Metro. Metro at Vienna fills up by 8:15 most days, except for reserved spaces. (same with Dunn Loring.) on the bright side, the metro commute is only about 45 minutes, if that.

Driving from Vienna to gallery place after 6:45 a.m. can take 75 minutes. At least that's how long it always took me. If I left my house at 6:30, I was at work by 7:05.

Really? Brightwood is still largely the 'hood. 16th Street Heights is nice if you're an elite buppie who attended an HBCU. Mount Pleasant doesn't have much retail besides pupusas and Bancroft isn't very good. Glover Park is bland and far from Metro.

I'd take a tiny shack in Friendship Heights over a mansion in Vienna any day! While I get why someone would choose the big house in a far out suburb, it's not for everyone. It's certainly not for me, or based on OP's criteria, not for her either.

Who knew that there were only shacks in Friendship Heights and only mansions in Vienna?

What a strange world DCUM posters live in.

I think you need to brush up on your reading comprehension. I said I would prefer a shack in FH to a mansion in Vienna. Could you please explain how this implies there are only shacks in FH and only mansions in Vienna??? What I was saying is that given the choice between a crappy house in FH and a nice one in Vienna, I'd take the crappy house over the crappy location. I live near FH and am very aware of the housing there. I'm not sure there is even actually anything that I would classify as a "shack" in FH.

Well, I'm not sure there's anything in Vienna for $800K that I would classify as a "mansion."

Anyway, I'm not the poster who suggested the OP would be ill-advised to live in FH if they could get a house in Vienna for the same amount of money, so whatever floats your boat...

OP here. Thanks for all of the ideas. We are looking at the CC MD listings and those look great. I love Takoma Park, but schools are an issue there for us, as are the not so desirable neighboring communities. We will look into VA as well.

The schools in TKPK are an issue? And all the surrounding brown people? PLEASE stay out of Takoma Park!

Not to be a Debbie Downer but that house while it looks "nice" on the outside seems a bit dated. I don't, really don't understand why people live in the District for those prices. Move to Vienna and for that price you can get a nice 5bed/4bth in a good school district with tons of land for less. DC is overpirced, crowded, lots of crime etc. I'd never pay all $ for that.

It is now under contract after less than week and listing implies there were multiple offers.

No is arguing with the fact that there are multiple social climbers who strive to have DC addresses.
