Where to look around DC? Please help with neighborhoods!

Anonymous
DH and I are looking to buy in the DC area in 6-9 months. Our budget is $700K to maybe $800. We will both be working in Penn Quarter/Metro Center. We have 2 little ones so schools are important. We are open to various ways to get to work but would prefer to be within 45 minutes. We would like a SFH in a neighborhood with a community feel. We are indifferent on whether house is in DC, VA or MD at this point....although in an ideal world we be in a woodsy type of neighborhood. Any ideas? We are hopinh to start looking soon and narrow down our search this fall.

North Arlington - great commute whether you drive or Metro, great community, great schools.

Bethesda is probably the MD counterpart to N Arlington.

CC DC - and more specifically, if you don't need to be on the metro, Barnaby Woods. Again, if not need to be on metro, Glen Echo Heights in Bethesda fits all your criteria incl superb schools and wooded area.

North Arlington isn't very woodsy. Lots of sidewalks and Starbucks, though.

??? the neighborhoods north of lee highway are pretty woodsy, especially over by potomac overlook park and the neighborhood before chain bridge.

Some yes, most no, including many north of Lee Highway. Lots of concrete and lots taken up mostly by houses.

Arlington is like Queens borough of NYC but without the diversity or many good restaurants.

Maybe Northwest Arlington bordering on McLean? there are some older lots with big trees up there. you can also find some large lots in South Arlington, but the schools aren't quite as good. You can also find some more wooded areas in Falls Church, in the McLean high school boundary. Burke has some heavily wooded neighborhoods, but it's a longer commute. (I can't speak to MD

Glover Park, DC is woodsy (actually has trails in Glover Archbold Park, which is part of Rock Creek Park) and the neighborhood school, Stoddert ES, is good. There is no metro close by but it's served by three bus lines, two of which can get you directly to Penn Quarter in the morning (the D1 and the 32/36). The other, D2, is a continuous loop back and forth to the Dupont Circle metro. Very handy.

I second this recommendation. If you're open to the suburbs, you'll find better schools in Glen Echo or in Chevy Chase, MD. All are woodsy areas with good schools.

What are they going to get in CC DC for $700K? Is there anything?

Woodsy? Takoma Park, MD

OP here. Thanks for all of the ideas. We are looking at the CC MD listings and those look great. I love Takoma Park, but schools are an issue there for us, as are the not so desirable neighboring communities. We will look into VA as well.

You must not have spent much time in Arlington, PP. Sure, places like Clarendon and Crystal City are a little generic, but Arlington is a decent-sized city with lots of little neighborhoods with tons of character and funky mom-and-pop stores and restaurants. And diversity, seriously?? I'm not saying Arlington is the end-all-be-all of places to live, but I just wanted OP to know that your advice was not based in reality.

Anyone who goes looking in Arlington for "tons of character" or "funky" will probably be sorely disappointed. Name one neighborhood in Arlington where anyone would want to spend an entire afternoon walking around.
