You can't be serious. Lunch or dinner? Once or twice a year at Lebanese Taverna (good) or Lost Dog Cafe (OK, but just that). The better part of an afternoon or evening? No way. |
I have to agree. If Westover is what you consider "charming," well, I don't know what to say. |
| Can the Arlington folks recommend specific neighborhoods or zip codes with good schools, neighborhood feel, etc.? |
Start at Ray's Hell Burger in Roslyn/Courthouse, walk to Clarendon and a have a drink on the patio at Circa, get some Larry's ice cream too, then walk over to Northside Social and have some excellent counter culture coffee on the communal tables or outside...some would call that a decent afternoon.... |
If you want all white and lack of diversity, definitely recommend Chevy Chase. I myself would rather live in Takoma Park. |
Fattening is not the same as funky. And not many people really walk from Rosslyn to Clarendon very often. |

Which Metro line is closest to their work? I thought it was Blue/Orange, in which case, they want to live in North Arlington as the Red Line would just not make as much sense. Also, why drive all the way through DC from Bethesda if they aren't going to drive?
Word to the wise, OP. Expect, if you want to live inside the beltway, to get an older house that might need moderate work (e.g. combining a kitchen and dining room, putting central AC in, finishing the basement, etc.) Life is all aboot tradeoffs. If you're able to swing a 6-to-2 schedule, hell Purcellville or Thurmont would work if you're all aboot the woods in a good school district. |

I don't know many neighborhoods ANYWHERE where I'd spend an entire afternoon walking around, other than very urban hoods like Penn Quarter, with lots of stores. I could easily spend an afternoon in Clarendon, though, and I have.
In Arlington, I love Westover - it's got a good neighborhood feel, great schools, a few stores/restaurants you can walk to, and it's a great commute into DC. I love my neighborhood - Country Club/Yorktown. From my house we can walk to two parks, the high school, two grocery stores and a bunch of other stores and restaurants, and my neighbors and the schools are awesome. I love Clarendon - lots to do there, though hard to find something decent in your $ range. (You might be able to swing Lyon Park.) These areas aren't especially woodsy. I saw some pretty big lots (0.25 acre-ish) in South Arlington, in the Alcova Heights/ Barcroft area, but the schools aren't as good as the ones up North. Commute can be great, though. I think Aurora Hills in South Arlington is charming - it's near Crystal City. Houses get snapped up REALLY quickly there - you have to really be on your toes. Oakridge Elementary is supposed to be decent, though I haven't heard much about Gunston Middle. |
sounds like you don't even know the area, the walk from Rays to the other points here is not a big deal at all and would be done regularly by people living in the area.... |
The only reason people wouldn't walk from Rosslyn to Clarendon (which I used to do all the time - and often from Rosslyn to Ballston, or vice versa) is that it's all uphill.

The area I live in Arlington is quite woodsy. Our neighborhood backs up to the WOD trail and lots of other parks and playgrounds. Many homes front or back to parkland here which makes it seem even more woodsy- you don't necessarily have to own the woods to feel like you are near them.
There are major roads, like Wilson Blvd, right on the outside of our neighborhood, though. You could find a home here, Bon Air, Bluemont, or Dominion Hills for 800 or under. It will be older, though. |

This house just came on the market near Friendship heights metro. Looks cute, decent yard and walkable to everything.

Not to be a Debbie Downer but that house while it looks "nice" on the outside seems a bit dated. I don't, really don't understand why people live in the District for those prices. Move to Vienna and for that price you can get a nice 5bed/4bth in a good school district with tons of land for less. DC is overpirced, crowded, lots of crime etc. I'd never pay all $ for that. |
