Who is Betting Irene Hits us??

User to live in south FL, where I became a NOAA addict every summer.

We moved back to Florida last year and live on the coast. I grew up in Hawaii. And we were in the Mississippi Delta when Katrina and Rita hit. I've been through way too many hurricanes. The thing that scares me is that people who live in hurricane prone areas know to be aware when storms threaten. We already have hurricane kits, emergency food and water, evacuation plans, etc..... I worry about the Northeast simply because it's been so long since a major hurricane hit that area. I'm not sure people are taking this threat as seriously as they should.

I grew up in New England and tehre were only a couple of hurricanes/tropical storms - none of them were very bad. Before I was born there was one storm that knocked a tree onto my parents house (narrowly missing my dad and my brother). That's it.

The biggest issue is we always get these "it's gonna hit! It might hit! It could hit! It may hit! It's gonna hit! Oh... nevermind" so often people just wait until the last minute to find out if it will actually impact us or not. It doesn't help that the media likes to overblow and overplay everything so it can create a bit of a "boy called wolf" scenario.

Truth be told I have no idea what to do in case of an actual hurricane and I wasn't in the DC area for Isabel. We have an emergency kit (as always) and some bottled water but that's it. If it looks like it will actually be bad I'll do what we used to do to prepare for major snowstorms in New England and set aside water for cooking/brushing teeth/bathing as well as drinking water and hope for the best.

My sister in law is getting married this weekend and the hurricane shares the same name as her grandmother who just passed away in July. Were she in her right mind to express it over the last year, she would not have approved of this wedding.

I love stories like this. My aunt swears my uncle still communicates to her in odd ways. Most recently, their dog died and a bunch of weird "communication"-type stuff happened.

Was anyone around for Gloria? I read that nearly took out OC and caused millions of dollars worth of damage.
