Yup. At a minimum, lots of rain and inconvenience.

My parents had a party. My uncle got shit faced, fought with my father and my other uncle, and then we were all trapped in the house until the storm blew over.

pure misery

Me me! I had a sleepover at the neighbors'. Scary stuff for a 7 year old (fun memories though).

Better get the gutters cleaned ASAP! Maybe add extenders to the down spouts.

This could be a bummer of a way to find out that your house sustained cracks during the earthquake.

I'm so sorry. My parents are supposed to go to Cape Cod this weekend and the last time they went was the last time a hurricane hit Cape Cod. I think they should consider going to the Berkshires. Is there still time for you to head somewhere West instead?

If not, take a big puzzle (like 1000 pieces) so that the whole family can do it together. It might sound lame, but we used to do this when I as growing up (way North) during blizzards and it was something that kept us around a table talking. Actually, those are some of my favorite memories of growing up.

This one looks like it is going to get bad.
New York could get a direct hit.

Thank you for the detailed response! My mother in law lives in Riva, her townhouse is on a creek off the South River. I'm trying to convince her to come spend the weekend with us just in case there is flooding or bad weather. At least she's safe then.

Isabel was kind of a benchmark for recent storms, not necessarily because it was so powerful but because it timed it's arrival with the tides just right and created a rather massive storm surge, nearly 8 feet in some areas around the Bay. If your mom is close to the water she might have some flooding, and if the winds are strong she'll more than likely lose power. If she is on a well and septic rather than city water she might have a problem if her well gets flooded.

In parts of South County Anne Arundel and Calvert County it was a bit rough during Isabel. We had no power for about 5 days. Our well wasn't flooded but without power it wasn't functional. We had quite a bit of debris we had to remove and on top of all that it was really really hot that week (no ac). Our home was cutoff from basically everywhere by downed trees for about 24 hours or so. Folks in North Beach were flooded for nearly 36 hours, about 4-5 feet deep in many homes.

Here are some more details on the effects of Isabel in Anne Arundel County in case you are interested.

But like I mentioned, I don't think this storm, given the current computer models, is going to approach what we saw during Isabel.

Downtown Annapolis had significant flooding and damage, I'll never forget these photos http://www.computervice.com/gerulaitis/Isabelle.htm

Actually a couple of the latest weather computer models take it from OBX and up the bay - similar to Isabel but a touch east. The NWS hasn't taken the official path that far west yet but keep an eye on it because I don't think we're out of the woods yet.

The way it was tracking before I thought we'd just get wind and rain - similar to what we've gotten the past few years with storms that go up the coast.

However, with some models bringing it closer we may get more then I originally thought. If it tracks up the bay or comes closer inland it'll be a lot like Isabel and that would make me nervous - especially if Irene is stronger.

We really don't know until it gets closer. Give it a couple days.

Scheiss.

I am almost certain that my 100 yr old chimney will fall apart with the next wind gusts. Anybody know if that means we'll get water down the fireplace like a luge? Any engineers here? I thought I had more time to call a mason, since the bricks didn't actually fall to the ground after the earthquake like my neighbor's bricks did.

Two show it coming through the area but they show first landfall further South than Isabel. Will be tracking tonight for updates. Could be pretty bad for East of DC area.

Agree. The tracking seems to be moving westwardly.

User to live in south FL, where I became a NOAA addict every summer.

We still might go, but postpone by a day. But I'm a little concerned about power outages. And if they issue an evacuation order (this is Bethany Beach), then NOTHING will be open. It might just be better to have a little family hurricane party right here.

I bet this hurricane will be like my ex-wife. It will come in loud and wet and when it's done it will take my house and my car.
