Private & Independent Schools
So what you are saying is, 'move over, my priveledged child deserves your childs spot' I cannot help but wonder why someone who has chosen private school for their child would judge parents who do the same, but have no money. What is it to you? |
I think you might be incorrectly assuming that PP is a private school parent. I read that post as coming from a public school parent who is "judging" private school parents. Maybe that changes your response? |
| I wonder if the government -- since we are broke -- would ever institute means testing on public school students' families similar to FA? Fee for services rendered? I am for it rather hiking all of our taxes to educate the miserly's children! |
| PP here, I know there are vast exceptions to this mental rubix cube and it is just a thought given the sky rocketing cost of education and the cost of living in MoCo and Fairfax. The tuition increases in the private school have lead to a barbell effect with the middle class leaving them first. I don't see an answer for a sustainable future in education and have taken on more private instruction for my children. One of our DC's private schools isn't worth the gas money in terms of education. what happens when many of these kids have to turn to the public school system to catch up? more overburdened schools. I wish I could see a clear future for our children when the world is academically overtaking us for pennies on the dollar. |
| Good. Now stay in your suburbs. Your "Best public schools" argument is akin to the tallest midget in the circus. Public school in general all suck. |
| I'm a public school parent, but the "doom and glooM" theory that private school kids are going to be hit hard by college tuition is nuts. Yes, tuition costs are skyrocketing, but so are other options. I see a future where college is for rich and the rest get "right to the point" by atte |
it is already like that And that is the reason many US students study abroad |
Or the govt could institute a luxury tax on private school tuition AND take away the tax exempt status w/r/t local real estate taxes. Then specifically earmark those funds for the corresponding local public schools. |
or how about we reinstitute the feudal society that existed in Europe in the middle ages. After all people must be stupid if they breed. Or maybe we can tell England that we are no longer able to govern ourselves and demand that they take us back Or maybe we solve financial problems by stealing land from the native Americans (..sorry, they are already dead and the ones living have no land) Maybe England will sell us some more xxx from Africa to do all the work Or maybe we could go and invade a country that has a lot of oil (like Iraq) Give me some more ideas. I do not see why children living in America must be the first ones to pay the price for the politicians stupidity. |
| Our family prioritizes health first, so we spend a lot of money on fresh food and some help with cooking it. We have a nanny, as both parents work long hours. We live in a small house and drive regular cars. No fancy kitchen appliances, vacations, or gizmos. However, given that we already spend around $3,500 a month on nanny, pre-school for 2 kids, and some help around the house, we are not able to justify spending another $6,000 a month to send the kids to a private school. This would bring the total spending to over $100k a year and the question is what exactly are we buying at this price point that cannot be achieved by a combination of a public school with supplementation from parents/tutors if needed? |
| If you wonder whether or not you can afford it:you can't. Not a spoiled rich parent here, just another well paid 2 professional income parent who ALSO can't afford it if I want to retire someday. It is ok not to be able to afford it! |
Both parents working long hours, two household employees? I'll see you (or the nanny) at the public school open house. |
And so do you... |
| can a family making 150k with an "average" size mortgage (4k/mo) even qualify for any financial aid for private school? does anyone have any examples? |
Just curious about the value of your house -- 4k seems like a big mortgage... |
