3 decades ago (my frame of reference), these were the 2 pre-eminent institutions for higher learning for boys among the area Catholic families. Gonzaga is/was unabashadly urban. Prep much more suburban. I mean this both literally and figuratively.

Three decades ago, that may have been true. But the lustre from Gonzaga has faded, and Prep has reshaped itself as above all a sports powerhouse, at the expense of everything else.

Where does Mater Dei fit into this Catholic school heirarchy?

Gonzaga has alot of work to do in responding to a diverse community of students. The school is selective...but also needs to children of color feel welcome and appreciated. Excellent academics and sports.

Mater Dei is through grade 8 and many of the boys aspire to Prep. Prep high school coaches also coach at Mater Dei in some sports.
