Gonzaga High School

My husband and his two brothers graduated from Gonzaga. I might be biased, but they are three phenomenal men, in every respect. I hope to send my two boys to Gonzaga when they are older.

I've had a couple work colleagues who graduated from Gonzaga... Thought they were very well-mannered and bright, but lacked critical thinking/analytical skills.

We may want to skip on back to reality here, folks. The couple of people we all know who went ANYWHERE are not representative of that school. And your 4 years of high school do not single-handedly determine your character, your personality, or your "critical thinking/analytical skills."

Of course there are many factors that come into play. But one thing this school focuses on is teaching each boy to be "a man for others." Every little bit helps.

Thank you, and that is exactly why I am interested in this school.

I believe this is a trait of most Jesuit educations. While I am not overly religious, I love this idea of getting a great education, but also building character with an emphasis on helping others. I am the pp whose husband went to Gonzaga and he certainly is one of the most kind, intelligent and respectful people I know. He went on to Boston College (another Jesuit school), and received excellent educations at both places.

Not knocking Gonzaga, but don't you think there's a selection bias going on here? Families that send their kids to Gonzaga probably hold the values taught at the school in high esteem. So these guys would probably turn out well no matter where they went to school.
We have several friends who are Gonzaga grads -- all wonderful guys who not coincidentally come from wonderful, close-knit families.

Agreed that there is a fair amount of self-selection at Gonzaga, and I think that's a good thing. I would be very pleased if my children joined school communities where the faculty and other families reflected the values we try to live by and instill in our kids. I grew up in the area and know many Gonzaga graduates, and all of them are responsible, public service oriented, thoughtful men.

Is one person writing all of the above posts?? I grew up in the area as well and know many Gonzaga grads. Some are nice, good intelligent people, others are not. It is not a special school. A few grads were actually kicked out of other boys schools (prep, landon).

I'm the PP who mentioned Pat Conroy's memoir - my only Gonzaga reference point. But my brothers went to Fordham Prep in NY, another Jesuit school, and they credit the Jesuits with building their characters and teaching them two things: intellectual curiosity and the importance of service to others. So I agree with your post. I wish I went to a Jesuit school myself - my education was just not as strong.

Gonzaga is a great school with a very strong alumni. The academics are excellent. I have a friend who graduated from there and went on the get 7 degrees from Harvard and MIT. Now that's intellectual curiosity!

How does Gonzaga stack up against Georgetown Prep?

Gonzaga is to Prep as St. Albans is to Landon.

can someone explain the last comparison between Gonzaga and Prep? I don't know enough about the boys schools in this area to understand. I'm the OP.

3 decades ago (my frame of reference), these were the 2 pre-eminent institutions for higher learning for boys among the area Catholic families. Gonzaga is/was unabashadly urban. Prep much more suburban. I mean this both literally and figuratively.
