I laughed at that too. My DH is a dentist, and when I think about a nail establishment buying one, I spit my coffee. Hahaha.

Sorry, I should have said heat sterilizer (my brain defaults to thinking autoclave). Heat sterilizers are FDA approved and a small model can be bought for around $600. The type of set-up used in a hospital/doctor's office is obviously going to cost more since it is bigger and used more frequently. I can see the machine and they open the packages in front of each customer, so yes, I know exactly what they do.

I don't know why, but that one phrase is making me laugh my fool head off. I like the idea of everyone getting their *little* toenails filed by someone wearing a surgical mask. Anywho, this thread is freaking me out b/c I get pedicures every 3-4 weeks during open-toe sandal season (in the winter i don't bother, I just maintain my feet myself with no polish) and i've never had an issue with fungus or hep b/c, or mrsa. Now I'm wondering if I should keep playing with fire?

Yikes. Kinda sorry I clicked on this thread. But now I know.

Thank you for this thread, and I'm not being facetious. Just yesterday as I stared at my winter feet in sandals for the first time this year I thought "I think I'll break down and overcome my fungus fear and just go for a pedicure." Hells no.

This still doesn't address the tub issue - even if they clean the tubs, I am guessing they don't take the jets apart each time to scrub them out. That is where the really nasty stuff grows.

Again, WHAT about the places that use the disposable liners?? If there isn't one, I should start one to make tons of $

You won't catch Hep C from a pedicure unless it involves shooting heroin with your beautician.

I really don't get why people can't paint their own toenails. Just practice a little people. I figured this out when I was 13.

I'm talking about Hep C- I know its *hard* to get, but the fact that its possible is NASTY.

Well, if we're talking infections.. it's technically possible to get HIV from an unsterilized set of tools, if the technician accidentally cuts an infected person and subsequently cuts you. The chances are fairly slim, but not zero.

HIV is a pretty fragile virus. It doesn't do well outside the body. This actually would never happen.

Yikes. Finally mustered the courage to go get a salon wax, and now this thread has me thinking about double dipping, herpes, etc.

Herpes isn't transmitted by feet. You people are insane and have no concept of immunology. Also you are too stupid to apply toenail polish? I pity the children you raise.

And you are too stupid to read. Women do not go to salons to have their feet waxed.

Lets all live in a bubble!

Yes, I know someone who got this from pedicures and spent a lot of time at NIH for trial treatments. ICK ICK ICK.

I got a pedicure a couple of times when I was pregnant that was about it. I do it myself because of all the infections you can get. Seriously, it is not worth the risk.

I love manis and pedis but I just have never been able to bring myself to go to a salon for this.
