#1 was born at 37w6d at 7.25lbs and was EBF for a year before we introduced whole milk. I had more issues with #2 who was born at 39w2d.
Congrats on the upcoming birth! |
OP, is your new baby a girl or boy?
Just asking because girls generally seem to be a bit more mature, even at 37 weeks. For more information, google "wimpy white boy syndrome". |

I'm interested in what others have to say on this topic. I had DS #2 six days ago at 37 wks 1 day. He seems to be doing great, though he was born a bit small -- 6 lbs., 6 oz. because I'm on a medication that comes through breastmilk, I am not breastfeeding. so that's not an issue. I just can't help feeling bad that the kid is small, and I keep wondering whether he will have problems down the road as a result. his ped is sending us to a cardiologist to check out a heart murmur. I know murmurs are common -- and harmless a lot of the time -- but my mind is racing. thanks, everyone. |
My oldest was born at 37 weeks and was only 4 pounds. I had an emergency c-section. We left the hospital on day four together. He had no trouble breastfeeding at all. That tiny 4 pound baby is now a 6'3 22 year old young man. |
My daughter was born at 36 weeks and four days...she was teeny (six pounds) but strong and healthy and came home with me from the hospital. She's two now, and she's gone from the fifth percentile in every measurement at birth to the 95th for height - early bird babies don't necessarily stay small! I will say that twice she's had to be on an inhaler for a few days - when she gets really sick, she seems to get a little wheezy, and both times I've wondered if it was because she was early. Other than that, she's stayed my strong, healthy girl. |
My 2nd was born at 37 weeks, weighing 8lbs 8oz! No breastfeeding problems, but had reflux and jaundice. I believe those things would have happened anyway.
Good luck! |
I was 4 lbs 12 ounces. No health problems at all, respirator, or anything like that. Your baby's weight sounds good to me! |
I was 6lbs 14oz and I was 2 days late! 37 weeks and 6lbs is far from a preemie. |
my son was born 3 days shy of 37 weeks and 7lbs 4 oz. His lungs couldn't have been more premature. He required two doses of surfactant, was intubated for 5 days, on nasal cannula etc. He had to be weaned off of the incubator as well. Was he an exception? Possibly. But he was definitely premature despite him being quite big for a 36 weeker. My daughter was smaller than him at 38 weeks and had no issues at all. Btw I hardly breastfed him during his NICU stay due to a variety of things. My milk came in the 2nd day after birth and I was pumping exclusively. You can have a great milk supply if you are vigilant about pumping even with a preemie. |
Living the dream, says the lady who's DS hung on till 42 weeks! |

37w1d, 7lb14oz. Nursed like a champ, was a chubby, healthy baby and a very healthy toddler. Now, at 3 weighs as much as my picky eater 5-year old, sleeps through the night, fully potty trained, smart, cute, funny and has only seen the ped for the required well visits for the past 2 years. Don't worry - baby will do great! Babies have a mind of their own, and when they decide it's time, it's time. Just like with everything else (including whether they will BF, or refuse the paci, or sleep, or poop, or use the potty or eat their veggies. Good luck! |
Just to add another perspective. More than 30 years ago, I was born 7.5 weeks early, 3lbs, 11oz and spent most of my time in an incubator for 10 days, although my parents touched/held me as much as possible. My mom breastfed me for a year, EBF for 6 months, and I am very healthy overall. I think I was a pain with getting me to sleep though . . . Now expecting my first - at 38 weeks, wondering when I will get to meet her, and hoping karma about sleep doesn't bite me ![]() |
Both of mine came at 37 weeks.
Son: 7lbs 1 oz Daughter: 8lbs 14 oz Both came home with me in 24 hrs and breastfed well into their second year of life. |
My DS was born at exactly 37 wks by c/s because of low score on Biophysical Profile - he was becoming more and more nonresponsive. He was tiny (5 lbs, 6 oz) but didn't need to go to the NICU and was able to come home with us.
BF was problematic and my milk supply never really got established and after struggling for six weeks we went with formula. He had a couple minor caridiac issues but after eight months they resolved on their own. 14 months later he is doing great! Oh and we had to send family out for preemie sleepers - everything was huge on him and I remember being terrified that he would get tangled uo in clothing while sleeping. Zutano and giggle have some nice footed sleeper options. Good luck! |
