Many of them do not want to become citizens, pay taxes or learn the language. They simply want to earn as much as they can and send it back home to their families without paying any taxes.

And in the meantime, people expect our public schools to provide ESL instruction in each child's native language. Can't just provide instruction in Spanish because that would be discriminatory towards children from other countries. Have you ever thought of all the possible languages? In major cities, schools have students who speak Russian, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Farsi, Berber, etc.

How familiar are you with No Child Left Behind? ALL kids--including non-English speakers--are expected to pass annual exams. If a subgroup of students--like those non-English speakers--has an overall failure rate, the school risks being named a "Failing School," and being closed. Of course schools are scrambling to ensure that everyone passes those tests, despite the tremendous drain on resources.

That's why No Child Left behind is doomed to fail everyone.

I'm fully aware and appreciate your post. I've been in the education field for over 30 years. It's like a mission for me to help these kids succeed, but I do think too much is being asked of classroom teachers. (I'm a former special ed teacher who now does evals.)

And broke the law by coming here illegally and you have broken law by not reporting them.

Show me this law.

I have lived in many different countries, always legal or on diplomatic status, and you do not complain about the inconveniences of any particular country. It is bad manners. My feeling was always that no one held a gun to my head to go there and, therefore, if I don't like it, I can always leave. This is the same way I feel about those who come to the US, where no matter how bad it can be, it is still a million times better than any other country, including Western Europe, then get the hell out. I also have no patience with those who make no attempt to learn English and I am fed up with having instructions that have to be translated into Spanish, Viet Namese, Korean, and 20 other languages. Learn to speak English or get the f... out.

I cannot get over the feeling that you are lying. If you really have lived in many different countries, then I am sure you would be more tolerant. In some cultures complaining is viewed as being honest.

Learn to speak English?? How about we tell the Americans living in Okinawa that they need to learn Japanese or get out?? Oh, sorry, they are getting out.

I don't know why we need these bases everywhere when we aren't fighting those countries, but that's beside the point. Equating people living for a few years on a military base where they can work and shop on the base in their native language to people in the normal population of society who are likely here for many years on end is not the same thing at all.

This is true. Our contractor had a guy on his team who had been in this country for over 15 years and still did not speak much English. I can't imagine living in another country for 15 years and not learning the language. But the guy lived in a community where he could live and shop without ever having to learn it. If you aren't forced to learn the language, you won't. But that also means that you will likely never see a higher paying job, never be able to buy a house, communicate in an emergency, etc.

When you are pissed off at the way things are going, and you have nowhere else to vent, just bitch about immigrants.

It's a time honored tradition, and it is exactly the point of this thread. Illegal immigrants are ungrateful wah wah waaah.

Who cares. You want to deport them anyway, why should they try to make you love them.

OP here. I respect your thoughts, but they are simply not true, in my case. I only wish that those that are here in the U.S. would love and appreciate the place they obviously want to be (for whatever reason). From an African-American male perspective, I can tell you that there are many things about America that irks me, but that won't ever change how much I love my country. I honestly don't hate immigrants of any status; I do have a very hard time with people who disrespect my native land. That's all.

It's spelled "Vietnamese" in English (which is your language, too, right?!). If you want to be all authentic, you would need to call it tieng Viet. Seems silly to bitch about translations and then not even write it correctly in either language.

Love, a born-in-the-USA white lady married to a Vietnamese dude (who knows English perfectly).

Legal immigrant here, who bitches and moans about the US on a regular basis... I'm here to make $$, and only to make $$. After I make my $$, I'm going home to retire in my home country and live a peaceful life. Sadly I make more money in the US, so my reasons for living here are purely financial. I'll be able to retire by 45, so thank you USA for that, but not for much else.

PP again... This is all true for me, except that I have legal status and pay taxes. Can't wait to leave and go home once I make my nest egg.

No worries.
The world is changing and so is America. At one time the only language spoken here was the language of the native americans. Then the whites came and they were not all English speaking. Then they bought the blacks who had a language of their own. Later the red man got to die out, the blacks were still sub-servient. Eventually somebody descided to make America English-speaking, so that is what supposedly happened. But there really is not anything historic about being in America and speaking English, or being here and not speaking English.
Does anyone know, why did they choose English? That is not really even a real language. So many of the words come from other languages. They really picked the one language that was quite poor

english is the language of international business. and the world won't be around much longer, who cares if it's changing. once nukes were invented, the stopwatch started.

We speak English because for a certain portion of world history Britannia ruled the waves. Otherwise, hablamos espanol?
