The original post is not about the politicians. It is about one, or a handful of posters here on DCUM, who turn a single quote or headline into some trend about what All Liberals Want. |
I'm a conservative, one of the very few who post here, and really, this strikes me as a bit of unfair comment. The message board format is not conducive to nuanced conversation, so a certain amount of cooperation and an assumption of good faith is required to advance the ball, as it is pretty easy to distort a position that is presented in such a format. There are lots of qualifiers and caveats that get glossed over, otherwise you couldn't really talk about anything. As someone who has tried to have thoughtful political discussion here, my sense has been that there are very few people here with anything close to an open mind regarding conservative political views, and discussions tend to get a bit shrill. You really would be better served if you didn't assume your political opponents are stupid, ignorant, or malevolent, and rather tried to understand where they are coming from. Just saying. |
I don't think that you are an opponent at all. Nor do I think that most of the posters are stupid, ignorant, or malevolent. I am referring to one or a handful of people who write specific posts which generalize a single comment to an entire political persuasion. Overgeneralization is an unfair tactic. |
Your post shows nuanced and careful thought. I don't think anybody is referring to you. There is one idiot here, though, and that's the "liberals want to ...." poster. Many of us are hoping she will go away so that we can talk to informed and thoughtful posters like you, without all her static. |
