The kids love it, the traditions, the cheers, the fun practices, etc. It’s summer, it’s hot, but there’s water, you get splashed, and meets are really pretty short. B meets are generally only hot for an hour, and then it’s fine. Have fun!

You lost all credibility when you said meets are really pretty short.

Our meets are short. Trust me. I swam in another state where we had one meet per week and big teams always swam big teams. Add in thunderstorm delays (our meets took place on weeknights), and meets were 5-6 hours. My kids swim on a really big team now, yet B + A meets are only 3.5-4 hours TOTAL. They are short!

You may consider 4 hours short, but 4 hours after work on a weeknight is brutal.

I'd feel too badly about disqualifying so many kids. It's not a position I'd want.

Kids DQ themselves. It's part of the sport.

2nd to this. It’s like feeling bad about calling a kid out on three swinging strikes. S&T is just the messenger. And 90something % of DQs should not be a surprise.

+3

S&T are helping the kids get better. Why put all the time and effort into swimming if you don’t want the feedback needed to improve? IME of many years doing S&T, the parents have a much harder time with it than the kids.

I genuinely enjoy officiating. It’s a (mostly) great community of parents who care about helping kids. You get to learn something, it passes the time, and it’s necessary for the meets to happen.

I think poster meant A and B combined are only 4 hours, and that’s been my experience too.

It’s a lot, but imo the benefits for the children are worth it:

—improves ability to swim and endurance for a lot of swimming (safety)
—improves mental health as a great endorphin-inspiring exercise they can do for the rest of their lives
—challenges and striving for improvement builds grit and resilience
—the potential to meet new friends in different age groups
—the potential to be mentored by a big buddy
—provides structure to the beginning of the summer if you don’t already have it in place with camps
—parents can gain new friends

It’s not for everyone; but if you lean in and look for the positives it can be well worth it

There are teams that combine A and B meets? Ours are typically 3-4 hours each. Big team. It’s super long. I wish the pools were bigger so there were 10 or 12 lanes so we had less heats.

And no- 3-4 hours is long. Every other sport has 1 hour games. Plus standing in 95 degrees timing for 4 hours is painful. I love timing and I love summer swim but it’s brutal on parents.

I really don’t want to be snarky, but I’ll spell it out. PP meant the A meet (1.5 hours) and the B meet (2-2.25 hours) together equal 4 hours or less, which is shorter than the meets she had growing up where there was just 1 meet per week for the whole team. Mathematically,
A + B < 1 Meet per week

Not the PP but our meets are longer, both A and B, and definitely exceed 4 hours combined.

Where are these magical 1.5 hour A meets and 2-2.5 hour B meets happening?!
