First year participating in summer swim

I'd feel too badly about disqualifying so many kids. It's not a position I'd want.

Wow. You people are the most negative people ever. To the OP: Summer swim is SOOO MUCH FUN! The kids love it, the traditions, the cheers, the fun practices, etc. It’s summer, it’s hot, but there’s water, you get splashed, and meets are really pretty short. B meets are generally only hot for an hour, and then it’s fine. Have fun!

Sorry but meets aren't short at all. I was out yesterday from 5:30-9pm. It was okay after about 8:15 when the sun went down but it was scorching before then.

Someone has to do it. I do stroke and turn, it sucks when you’re stuck in the sun.

Kids DQ themselves. It's part of the sport.

+1

It can be a lot, but it’s the best community building activity my family has done. This will be our 9th summer. I definitely dropped off for practice though and volunteered at meets so the time went quicker. Sharing a timing shift is the way to go!

2nd to this. It’s like feeling bad about calling a kid out on three swinging strikes. S&T is just the messenger. And 90something % of DQs should not be a surprise.

You lost all credibility when you said meets are really pretty short.

Our team doesn't do evening meets, just Saturday mornings. I hated it at first but actually sad it's our last year. I will miss it.

That said, I wish they gave gave spectators a chance to jump in and cool off when it's above 90. I actually have worn my suit under a cover up and taken a break from volunteering to stand in the cold shower for a couple minutes on the hottest of days.

Our meets are short. Trust me. I swam in another state where we had one meet per week and big teams always swam big teams. Add in thunderstorm delays (our meets took place on weeknights), and meets were 5-6 hours. My kids swim on a really big team now, yet B + A meets are only 3.5-4 hours TOTAL. They are short!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year.

15th season. Only one to go after this.

Hands down the best thing our family has been involved with.

Our team does this at halftime when it’s hot!

But man, you guys did not adequately prepare me for how miserable it is being poolside outside for almost 2 hours in 90 degree heat and weak shade. I am not looking forward to doing this all summer! I can't even see how the kids are doing due to the sun's glare and the lack of a real viewing area, so it's just me sitting in the scorching heat with no real payoff.

This is NOTHING…wait until it’s 103 and 99% humidity. Neck coolers are your new best friend. Wear light loose clothing that breathes. Volunteer to stay busy and hydrate!

Fine, it’s a pool he’s never been to before with completely new kids and coaches in a neighborhood we’ve never been to. Third practice is me on site but INDOORS in the AC. And we are going from there, working up to me running errands or something during practice. Our summer season just started on Monday so we will see. But DS has some anxiety so I’m building up to this, maybe others are fine being dropped off right away, especially if they have friends already on the team.

I'm not sure parents are even allowed at our team's practices. They want the kids focused on swimming, and they don't want any sideline coaching from parents.

. . .and then the thunderstorms start.
