Even though I am 95% certain I won't be returning to my job after maternity leave, I plan on telling my boss I plan to return. Why? I've been a hard-working, loyal employee for the last 4 1/2 years. I've done the job I was paid to do, and then some. I don't get any paid maternity other than what I've accrued in sick/vacation, am not on their health insurance plan and won't be receiving any retirement or other benefits while I'm on leave without pay. I feel like I've earned 3 months off (almost entirely unpaid) and they can manage while I'm gone (as I have done when my fellow employees have take off for maternity, sick, vacation, etc.). After being a good employee for so long, I should be able to come back on the off-chance that I have a change of heart. If I quit before I leave, I will be replaced within 6 weeks and returning will not be an option. I probably won't return, but I've earned 3 months to be certain before saying goodbye to my job forever.
