Submit score to UMD

Anonymous
What major are considering? It depends.

My MCPS (non-W) child with a 4.7 weighted GPA did not submit SAT scores and was accepted. All As junior year.

Near perfect unweighted GPA? It also depends on the rigor of coursework.

Yes, was trying to keep post short. Only has 1 B so far I think. Good rigor (all core classes are advanced or AP except 1. So good rigor but not Ivy League rigor.)

What's "Ivy League rigor?"

Rigor that future Ivy League kids take, so taking most rigorous level class that’s offered at that high school in all core subject areas or taking 6 AP classes per semester, IB student, etc.

This is not a thing. My kid and many others did that and are at UMD

I wasn't saying had to have ivy league type rigor to get into UMD. I said my kid had good rigor but not Ivy league type rigor and someone asked what I meant by ivy league rigor, so was answering what I meant.

Thanks. Our tour they said nothing and when asked specifically, they said holistic and wouldn't give an number.

Ensure you do your research well. Per admission officer, average SAT is1510 to CS and engineering. Ensure you have UMBC as a backup. Plus they have over 50% OOS kid. If in state tuition is important. CS and engineering are also limited enrollment.

I get that. I was referring to the school in general, not an major or LEP, since they let you in school before deciding on if got in major.

Thx. That’s surprising. Was gpa and rigor pretty good? I definitely would have submitted a 34 too! That’s a great score!

Yes. Good rigor and GPA. Applied for Business so maybe that was the issue?

shouldn't have been bc the rep told us they are major blind, but once you are accepted to school, they then decide if you are accepted in desired major or go with another major

When asking admissions rep one should submit if in the mid 50% range (which is currently 32-35) or only if above the 50% mark (which would be 34, since can't get a 33.5), he said aim to submit if above the 75th percentile. (This is crazy, because that's a 35 and this is not an ivy.)

as i mentioned - for LEP, major matters. Take CS for example - if you didn't get CS, you will probably not getting in the uni. I have seen this with my kids friends, someone with higher gpa/sat combo didn't get in to CS and the school but others with lower get in to the school.

i think for overall school, not LEP you should submit.

Interesting, bc they said they don't look at major until after they decide if get in school or not.

This isn’t true, you can get in and pick another major. They stack you against students in your high school so if you are at a high achieving high school and mid pack it’s going to be a struggle to get in vs at a lower rated school and being one of the high achievers.

I know that's what the AO said - but I have seen few cases, students from same high school - the higher gpa and higher rigor ones go for CS and the other one goes for undecided (arts and science). The CS ones got in as spring admit and the other one regular fall admit. There are others who didn't get into the school at all (applied as CS). Same high school.

I'm guessing that is becuase of the whole holistic review process. They look at 23 or 24 different things so in your example, who knows what their ECs were, who knows how their essays were, who knows if UMD wanted a tuba player for example. Also, different people read applications, so maybe Sue is a harder admitter than Beth or maybe Beth was in a bad mood the day read the app or read a phenomenal one directly before and so the next suffered by comparison. My point is it appears unfair and it is, but not just based on gpa and rigor and not at all based on major from what they have stated, unless you are saying they flat out lie, which I hope they don't.

What is you only choose one (CS) major?

Here's where I would love some insight: While they don't technically admit via major, you can kinda look at an applicant's profile and get a sense of whether you're looking at a humanities or business or engineering kid -- right? And that's where I'd imagine the holistic review does actually come in? So it's not admitting via major, but say the mathletes are all kind of in a bucket and are being reviewed in comparison to one another -- no?

I don't actually know how it works, just trying to suss this out.

UMD rep said not to submit unless 1480 sat. But when I look at Scattergrams, it seems very GPA related and there are almost no rejections in 1400s SAT but high gpas. Even when accounting for test optional vs not.
