I get that. I was referring to the school in general, not an major or LEP, since they let you in school before deciding on if got in major.[/quote]

as i mentioned - for LEP, major matters. Take CS for example - if you didn't get CS, you will probably not getting in the uni. I have seen this with my kids friends, someone with higher gpa/sat combo didn't get in to CS and the school but others with lower get in to the school.

This isn’t true, you can get in and pick another major.  They stack you against students in your high school so if you are at a high achieving high school and mid pack it’s going to be a struggle to get in vs at a lower rated school and being one of the high achievers. [/quote]

I know that's what the AO said -  but I have seen few cases, students from same high school - the higher gpa and higher rigor ones go for CS and the other one goes for undecided (arts and science). The CS ones got in as spring admit and the other one regular fall admit. There are others who didn't get into the school at all (applied as CS). Same high school.

I'm guessing that is becuase of the whole holistic review process. They look at 23 or 24 different things so in your example, who knows what their ECs were, who knows how their essays were, who knows if UMD wanted a tuba player for example. Also, different people read applications, so maybe Sue is a harder admitter than Beth or maybe Beth was in a bad mood the day read the app or read a phenomenal one directly before and so the next suffered by comparison. My point is it appears unfair and it is, but not just based on gpa and rigor and not at all based on major from what they have stated, unless you are saying they flat out lie, which I hope they don't.[/quote]

Here's where I would love some insight: While they don't technically admit via major, you can kinda look at an applicant's profile and get a sense of whether you're looking at a humanities or business or engineering kid -- right? And that's where I'd imagine the holistic review does actually come in? So it's not admitting via major, but say the mathletes are all kind of in a bucket and are being reviewed in comparison to one another -- no?
