This is not a thing. My kid and many others did that and are at UMD |
Not true. UMD cares more about GPA than test scores. Most kids denied with higher SAT had much lower GPA by comparison. |
| Major is important for UMD. For example For CS and engineering, SAT scores are factored into admissions plus EC and essay. Check reddit, some students didn't get in with above 1500. Ensure you do your research well. Per admission officer, average SAT is1510 to CS and engineering. Ensure you have UMBC as a backup. Plus they have over 50% OOS kid. If in state tuition is important. CS and engineering are also limited enrollment. |
| On a tour their AO said "don't send if it's not over 32." |
I have seen this quoted multiple times on this site. Did you hear this recently? I’ve heard always submit if you’re from a high performing school and you don’t have an otherwise incredibly compelling story and ECs. |
Yes, this cycle. They also mentioned that 2 years ago a 32 could have been ok, but not anymore. |
| 32 is equivalent to 1430, which was DH’s SAT score. He submitted it and got into UMD. UW GPA was maybe 3.8 or 3.9 from MCPS. |
| My kid knows quite a few friends getting into UMD with a low 1400s this year. It would have been tough last year from their school. Also, your kid can take it one more time over the summer. |
| It really, really, really matters where your DC is applying from when evaluating chances for U-MD. They very much care about geographic diversity within Maryland, and standards will vary from school to school and district to district. Assuming you are from DMV, and so your school has many UMD applicants each year, start with Naviance, and then ask your school's college advising office if they can tell you whether any students you see with your DC's stats submitted scores or not. |
from W school it's probably top 30% |
+1 |
| My MCPS kid with a 4.6 weighted GPA didn't submit test scores and got into UMD Smith. Attends a non-W upper county high school. |
Yes. Good rigor and GPA. Applied for Business so maybe that was the issue? |
Admissions are major blind |
Wow. This is eye opening. |
