Cal Poly is a freaking DREAM SCHOOL but a harder admit outside of state and not sure how much merit they would offer. The kid is a NMSF so definitely would put cal poly on his list.

East Texas tech?

College station, warm (hot!), very, very good engineering school (ABET), SEC sports.
And auto-merit for National Merit finalists: non-resident tuition waiver PLUS guaranteed additional scholarships.

Might not be the Dream, but it's a great safety for this student. Fun, warm, solid academics -- and the price is right.

Another vote for A&M. Fun SEC school and great engineering! The 12th Man!

No but UCF might be.

Originally a tech school, it’s got a solid college of engineering & lots of job connections in the Orlando area (when I went there, also with NASA on Space Coast. Not sure if still does). Sports have gotten a bigger following and buildings are largely new.

Downside: FL. It’s also kind of in the suburbs? Like, it’s in city limits but it’s very need-a-car-to-do-anything-off-campus vibes

All gave lots of merit to my DC this year:
Auburn
Univ of South Carolina
Penn State

Yes.

Full ride merit for NMF at U South Florida (plenty of sunshine), NJIT (less so) and a couple other schools.

Sure it is. This kid has high stats. Every single one of my kid's high stats friends/peers from an OOS public HS (at least 7 students) got into UF with merit including those interesting in engineering.

Looking for ABET school where kids are happy, athletic, offers a broad range of engineering disciplines, good weather, good employment prospects. I have VT but looking for somewhere that might offer good merit aid.

3.96 weighted or unweighted

For the Florida schools I’d watch the pending legislation about oos appkicants. If passed will turn a safety into a reach.
