| Looking for engineering safety school for high stat kid (1580, 3.96, TJ with better than average ECs but I don't think ECs matter much for safeties). Looking for ABET school where kids are happy, athletic, offers a broad range of engineering disciplines, good weather, good employment prospects. I have VT but looking for somewhere that might offer good merit aid. |
| Not sure it’s a true safety (probably more of a target) but Clemson may be a good option for this solid student with strong stats. |
| University of Arizona and Arizona state, Minnesota. Rose hulman. |

Agree with UA--friend goes there for about 24K/yr from FCPS.
WVU was a similar cost. |
| A friend's daughter got great merit aid and Honors Program at Santa Clara with similar stats. Demonstrated interest matters there, so not a true safety without it. She is very happy with the engineering program so far. |
| UVM |
She asks for good weather! |
| Colorado boulder |
Seconding this, though merit is inconsistent. Still worth putting on the list. |
| What's good merit to you? |
|
My similar stats/ECs engineering son got $20K/year at Pitt--basically made it match the in-state cost of Virginia Tech.
Other safeties (CU Boulder, UC Davis) did not offer any merit. Georgia Tech is not a safety, nor do I think they offer a lot of OOS merit, but the cost for OOS is relatively low compared to other OOS publics--and obviously top notch in Engineering. |
Not sure how old your friends kid is. My sophomore was offered a full ride from UA (not engineering so don’t know if that makes a difference) but my understanding is that the financial picture changed and the money isn’t flowing quite so freely anymore. Not saying there won’t be merit but it’s not like it was 3+ years ago. The UC schools like even Santa Barbara and Davis are now harder to get into so not sure if they are safeties but the Cal school am probably would be safeties and have nice weather. NC state might be good to consider. Tulane? I’m just not sure which schools are giving money for engineering since it’s so competitive. |

This is a pretty wide ranging set of criteria, i.e.
fun engineering school, good weather and merit. I am assuming that at the end of the day the academics and aid prospects outweigh weather and fun and suggest Colorado School of Mines. I assume Purdue is on the target list |
DD is at Mines and loving it. Got about $30K in merit. |
Congrats to her! Mines is a great school, surprised it is so seldom mentioned on this board |
