Just remember that the CCP took over all of Hong Kong a few years back. So transiting has different potential risks now. It is not the same as before.

Some won't care, but others might care. TPE or HND or NRT let one transit in a democracy instead. Its a choice.

You’ll be fine.

It will vary. I would not safe. Someone else might be.

Are you a Chinese dissident or an American spy?

No. See official US Government Travel Advisory:

https://hk.usconsulate.gov/security-alert-2026032601/

Even if only —transiting— HK, one must hand over passwords to all electronic devices. Failure to do so is a CRIMINAL offense under the HK/PRC National Security Law.

My employer has Chinese competitors who would love to have a copy of my personal mobile phone’s contact list, and also would love to have access to information on my company laptop. Does your employer have any Chinese competitors? Do you have any customer contacts in your phone?

My child is there (American) and I traveled there recently. People are not being asked to hand over their phones at the airport as a matter of course, but with PRC there is always risk.

I left my work electronics at home.

The PRC National Security Law has also applied to HK only for the last 15 years or so.

Unless you are a known political operator, journalist or similar, your phone will not be searched at the airport. HK is still a major international financial center. Millions of people travel there without incident.

Stop being a shill for China.

Everyone considering transiting HKG should read the actual State Dept report.

If you're super-worried, then leave transiting in Taiwain off the table also. Some say it's a great time for China to invade Taiwan, while US resources are focused elsewhere.
