planning trip to Asia for June--how to avoid Mid east

United to SfO then EVA to BKK via TPE.

United DC-SFO-HKG-BKK. All on actual United, no codeshares. Stopover in HKG for a few days in one direction.

You can also do United via LAX, same connection in HKG.

Just remember that the CCP took over all of Hong Kong a few years back. So transiting has different potential risks now. It is not the same as before.

Some won't care, but others might care. TPE or HND or NRT let one transit in a democracy instead. Its a choice.

You’ll be fine.

There is also a non-stop from Vancouver to BKK on Air Canada on certain days of the week (looks like Mon, Wed, Sat on the way there and Mon, Wed, Fri on the way back). I thought about doing that when we went last year, but 1) never found a decent price and 2) have almost never had a good experience on Air Canada and didn't want to risk it.

First, Nepal is not SE Asia. You won’t get get to KTM without another stop (transit through Bangkok or Singapore). Are flights in and out of India running? United has non stop from Newark to Delhi and then it’s an easy hop over to KTM.

Are you a Chinese dissident or an American spy?

EVA has a direct flight from Dulles to Taipei starting in June. We booked that for a Taiwan/Thailand trip in August.

I think PP meant non-stop where it says direct.

There was a previous thread about Eva adding a non-stop between TPE and IAD. Not flying daily, but maybe 4x each week.

Exactly. What’s wrong with Delhi? Although there are better ways to get to Bangkok, then through Delhi!

No. See official US Government Travel Advisory:

https://hk.usconsulate.gov/security-alert-2026032601/

Even if only —transiting— HK, one must hand over passwords to all electronic devices. Failure to do so is a CRIMINAL offense under the HK/PRC National Security Law.

My employer has Chinese competitors who would love to have a copy of my personal mobile phone’s contact list, and also would love to have access to information on my company laptop. Does your employer have any Chinese competitors? Do you have any customer contacts in your phone?

I can't really find an obvious booking going west (eg through SFO to Japan etc) although of course could put one together but it would be $$$$ more. Any reactions to if it is worth just doing that so we have a greater likelihood of being able to not have the flights cancelled if the mid east conflict is continuing?

Np. I’m confused. Why not just book through an Asian airline? Cathay Pacific, Korea Air etc.
