Even if only —transiting— HK, one must hand over passwords to all electronic devices. Failure to do so is a CRIMINAL offense under the HK/PRC National Security Law.

My child is there (American) and I traveled there recently. People are not being asked to hand over their phones at the airport as a matter of course, but with PRC there is always risk.
