BOE Spring Facilities and Boundaries Work Session #3

Is the option b alternative to the superintendents recommendation still on the table for the vote? Or no, because that would need a public hearing? Or maybe that was offered up before the public hearings?

This was a really weak representation of their constituencies across the board. Pat never would have stood for those, including not getting feedback from Wheaton Woods on moving out of Wheaton. It is true that MCPS didn’t bring that one up until near the end.

Can someone explain to me how Edison and Wheaton High School work?

I thought they were distinct and separate high schools, but in this work session, MCPS confirmed that Edison's 500-seat capacity is factored into Wheaton's boundary and utilization rate.

They also talked about building out the unused shell space in the future as a way of alleviating overutilization at Wheaton.

So it seems that Wheaton and Edison are not in fact separate schools, but that Edison is an extension of Wheaton High School that is available to students across MCPS as a half-day program. Is that right?

No, because the board didn't approve it moving forward.

Not option b, which I realize didn’t advance. But what about the alternative?

Correct. I thought Laura's assessment as to why they weren't engaged was accurate: Wheaton Woods thought things were staying the same and that they'd continue to go to Wheaton like now, only for them to be thrown into a whirlwind at the last minute with Taylor's modified B recommendation.

There's a Wheaton-Edison partnership in which students from ~16 clusters can be accepted into Edison's career programs and then take their regular courses at Wheaton as Wheaton students, so they're physically at one site all day. That's as opposed to other Edison students who attend their own neighborhood HS half the day and go to Edison the other half.

Edison has training in the trades. Students can go there and return to their home school, I believe. Or it sounds like they can go to Wheaton. Not sure how that works but would affect Wheatons enrollment.

I think a board member would have had to move the alternative and get a second, which didn't happen.

Well, they think they know what is best for the Wheaton Woods families.

I’m pretty shocked that no one did so. Really weak and disappointing representation.

I was pretty offended that a contributing factor seemed to be: “you mean another meeting? That we have to show up for?” I’m really not paraphrasing that.

This is important and if they need more hearings, so be it. Also disappointed with abstaining.

page 49 shows RMHS current utilization rate at 94.8%. If that's true, why are there so man portables there? Still don't understand how MCPS is getting enrollment figures.

In this session, they said the portables are due to RM's IB countywide magnet program, which leads to the overutilization.

Sure, but they will still have the regional magnet, so 60 students per year instead of 100 students from outside the RM cluster. They will also have some other regional programs bringing in another 30 or so students. MCPS is depending on 100+ students per year leaving RM for other regional programs to balance capacity. This is an assumption with no supporting data. Currently, less than 50 students total leave RM for other magnet programs.

apparently you think sending them to an over utilized Wheaton/Edison is best for them and leave the brand new school at 73% capacity lol

Yang mentioned meeting with but 5 families. She cares about her rich constituents only. And the chinese immersion kids at potomac. I really hope she is not on the county council. People from potomac!!! do not vote for her!!! she did not get what you wanted!!

Look people, we all get spammed my MCPS ... so many notices... so much opportunity. So many surveys. So much outreach. So many cry babies at hearings! WWES being at Woodward was in one of the recommendations. Same for VMES. Chill out. This is not an atrocity. This is a great outcome for the community.
