Why isn’t Jake Gyllenhaal a bigger star?

He was in Brokeback Mountain. He gave a great and convincing performance. Unfortunately, I also think that wonderful and convincing performance became a mental block for a lot of women to see him in a different way.

Counterpoint: Heath Ledger

Counterpoint: Heated Rivalry actors. (To the point that women can’t get over seeing hot men in a gay love story).

Let's see how they progress beyond Heated Rivalry. If they can do a Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton) who is openly gay, but to my knowledge has not had gay sex on screen, is accepted as a leading love interest.

You haven't seen Fellow Travelers.

Donnie Darko? Jarhead? Nightcrawler?

He’s a really good actor

He chooses to do a lot of prestige and niche films. He's terrifying in Nightcrawler. He also does a lot of theater.

He’s got a huge head and that droopy dog look.

Wait, is he not an a-list actor? I thought he was.

I think if he showed his t!ts like his sister does, he'd be more famous.

He was great in the recent Presumed Innocent series on Apple TV.

then he broke her like a promise. so casually cruel in the name of being honest

What does this mean? What did he do/say?

Glad anon DCUM person can comment on this with such authority

He was and it was at the perfect role for him -- perfect on the surface but morally compromised in a way that keeps you constantly unsure of whether he's good or bad. That's his niche.

Jude Law and Hugh Grant also occupy this gray space. They were both true romantic leads when they were younger, unlike Jake Gyllenhaal, but now they slide very easily into these roles that are morally ambiguous. Like Gyllenhaal, they are physically attractive but play narcissism, insincerity, and straight up dangerous very well.

He is an a list star. But I think he’s picky about projects and wants to do “art.” I also think a lot of people think he’s kind of a jerk or difficult which might limit his work a little too.

I personally find him irritating although I did like brokeback mountain. He and his sister both tend to have kind of a “we are so smart and artsy not like those brainless Hollywood types” attitude. Compare it to Matt Damon who is actually smart but seems to have a very down to earth, get along with everyone approach to life. (And also actually has great range.). Or Colin Ferrell who also plays dark and broody like Jake but who is a famously nice guy. This is just my take as a consumer of a lot of entertainment interviews!

Hugh Grant also has that rakish British charm.

He never called it what it was till they dead and gone and buried.
He laughed her dreams and rolled his eyes at her jokes.
We could keep going (and would love to) but it’s probably best to just listen to the Red album by T Swift.

I think he’s just not the charismatic and has a reputation (hehehe) for being a bit of an a$$ to work with. But I’m also probably a bit biased given my music taste.
