I get the overall idea and tone of your message but after having read these I'm not getting a lot of "mine is the best, yours is the worst" mentality....they seem to all be saying "pretty much everyone is good except this one person". I would have expected some people to be talking bad about Reston or STJ or TCE or Potomac or any other girls director but it is almost universally just MYHA. I have no further insight or info, just my take as a person with absolutely no dogs in this fight. |
I’ve met people who played for the current MYHA director when he was at Potomac and they raved about him too. To the OP — the girls hockey community in the DMV is great and helped the PWHL get its biggest crowd ever a couple months ago. I hope you enjoy it here. May your commute to practice be short and may your trips to the capital clubhouse be minimal. |

At the ages OP mentioned, she should really look closely at Potomac. They have done very well (sort of dominating) the area teams in AGHF and CBHL the last two seasons. They have a very strong group of girls (particularly if the ones who played coed AA this year come back for 14U Girls).
There are a lot of great programs in the area. |
I agree they had a strong 12U team this year - with the one caveat that they were a AA team who they kept putting in A leagues and tournaments (they should not have been in AGHF Platinum or CBHL Silver). Looking at their AGHF stats, a couple of players got most of the goals, so might not be a very balanced team. For the younger daughter, the 10U team was quite weak and she would be playing with many of those players. For the older daughter, in the past many of the top players leave Potomac at 14U for more competitive programs. Not to say they will moving forward but they often do. |
| St James 14/19, myha 16s on to nationals. |
| Op- nationals is in boston area. If you’re a crazy hockey parent like we are swing by and catch a couple games… |
| Shoot 19s only is in Boston, 14s are in mn and 16s in St. Louis. |
12U had two teams. One played in AGHF Platinum and the other played AGHF co-ed, CBHL upper A, and a lot of tournaments. Most of the upper team players were in their first year of 12U. Nearly all of them have worked with the girls hockey director since 6U. |
The message you quoted was talking about Potomac, not MYHA. |
| Wild that MedStar can’t field a decent girls program with all their AllHer bluster |
That's why for years they have lost all of their top girls players to other clubs. They build interest in girls hockey then do nothing to support it past Rooftop house league. I'm very worried their attempt at adding a girls travel team won't go well since most of their best 10U and 12U girls have already left. It very well could be a team to players fresh out of a learn to play program, which could be a very rough year and an excuse for them to stop it after a single season. |
The dmv has a better girls network than most metro areas. Having three levels of cbhl girls is great thing. But as far as national bound aa goes, there’s really only enough girls for two (maybe 3) teams that are deep enough to compete deep into the season. Stj is going to get all the girls from Va, and myha will get most of the girls from western moco and Frederick counties. tri city can attract girls from eastern moco, pg, Anne arundel, Howard co, etc, so they can be good as well. but beyond that, there’s no room for other clubs to field competitive nationally bound teams, Medstar included. |
Eh, my boys have played with enough girls in CHA that leave because there are zero opportunities leads me to think otherwise. Hard to say there's no room when limit growth |
To be fair, they may take ice time from a u6 boys team and we can't have that |
CHA doesn't need to be AA. They could enter teams into the Silver or Bronze divisions and I'd count that as a success. It would almost be better that way, since a lot of the AA girls programs don't have good fallback options for girls who get cut. It's not like up north where each org has a AA, A, and B team option - it's AA or bust with some of the teams. |
