Welcome to dmv girls hockey op! With only 1 aaa team and 3 competitive aa teams, by the time the girls complete 19u they will know all the other girls and will be on first name basis with the opposing coaches and hockey directors. Many of them will have played for multiple associations, done their camps, or played on their spring teams. This time of year, we are playing each other for the 10th time of the season to decide who goes to nationals, so it can be a little tense. Some of us view it as a community and dont hold grudges against the other clubs for some perceived infraction during 8u…or at least stay quiet about it. Others, like the few on a crusade here, view it as a famine mentality, gossip about the other players/coaches/directors, and view any success of another girl as an opportunity being taken away from their kid. It’s a shame, because living in the dmv and have 2 other competitive aa local teams is a blessing. Try being a girls hockey family in North Carolina or Florida. Don’t let the tone of this thread discourage you. All 3 programs (stj, myha, tri city) are run by legit hockey people and have competitive teams.
I get the overall idea and tone of your message but after having read these I'm not getting a lot of "mine is the best, yours is the worst" mentality....they seem to all be saying "pretty much everyone is good except this one person". I would have expected some people to be talking bad about Reston or STJ or TCE or Potomac or any other girls director but it is almost universally just MYHA. I have no further insight or info, just my take as a person with absolutely no dogs in this fight.
I’ve met people who played for the current MYHA director when he was at Potomac and they raved about him too. To the OP — the girls hockey community in the DMV is great and helped the PWHL get its biggest crowd ever a couple months ago. I hope you enjoy it here. May your commute to practice be short and may your trips to the capital clubhouse be minimal.
