DD telling all kinds of stories about her chemistry teacher that can’t possibly be true

Anonymous
I can also see a chemistry teacher doing just that. Your DD tells you because she's gauging your take on it and your take on it should not be that she's making stuff up (unless she does all the time, including other teachers)! This thread is funny!

There have always been kooky people and always will.

But DCUM, who has no knowledge of the student or the teacher, decided to condemn the teacher anyway. Because that’s how we roll here, right?

Imagine being a teacher these days, knowing that parents quickly and gleefully jump on the teacher-take down train.

Innocent until proven guilty, unless you’re a teacher, that is.

No, sorry, I believe my kid when they tell me things. I think we found the abuser in the thread! "Don't bother telling your mom, she won't believe you." But I WILL.

The OP says nothing to suggest that her daughter is generally a liar. She seems to suggest this is unbelievable because the stories are “wild.” And lots of posters are saying “this isn’t wild at all” based on our experience.

And I really, really don’t want to turn this into a “trash teachers” thread. I think the vast majority of teachers are wonderful. Even some of the oversharers are excellent teachers.

I think when you hang out with teenagers all day, you might lose perspective on appropriateness from time to time. I’m
Certainly not always “appropriate” in how I talk with/around my teen. But I am the parent so I get to judge this for my specific kid.

The truth is that my kid has one teacher who is beloved amongst most kids for his irreverent sense of humor. He makes my child deeply uncomfortable. I’m mostly with my kid on this. But I also think he hasn’t crossed a line that is reportable.

I’ve been teaching 25 years. I’ve had almost 3,000 students. Experience tells me most students are unreliable narrators.

And I’ve had to show plenty of parents the proof that their children’s stories aren’t true.

And call me an abuser? Come on, now.

OP I would bet a zillion dollars that your kid is not lying. My kids encountered some crazy teachers even in elementary school and more so in middle and high school that said some really crazy things. To my knowledge, only one was removed from the school but it was for bullying 1st graders not necessarily her inappropriate comments, one was fired for repeatedly using the N word, one left due to dementia and cognitive decline and one was fired for punching a student. The teacher who regularly reveals 504 accommodations and makes snide remarks about accommodations is still there.

Teaching is now attracting really low class, unprofessional people and the older teachers are one foot out the door/don’t care anymore.

You're a teacher? No one is saying the teacher in the OP is abusive. Posters have been relating their own experiences, or their kids', with teachers who overshare. That's normal and par for the course. Teachers are entitled to their feelings and idiosyncrasies. It makes them human and relatable.

Why are you feeling so triggered? This was one thread where teachers were not flagellated, and here you are, whining.

Nobody called the teacher abusive. **I** was called an abuser for sticking up for the teacher. So when you ask why I'm triggered, it's because my character was questioned simply because I (gasp) thought it's reasonable to give the teacher the benefit of the doubt. Several parents on this thread have said they will always believe their child. I"m here to say that occasionally, teens lie. I've had plenty of experience dealing with it over the years.

So, as the teacher who was actually flagellated (as you put it), I feel it's necessary to speak up. And... oh, I'm not "whining." Disagreeing with you is not "whining."

Is there a pattern of lying? If so, I would say that the things the teacher is being accused of saying are serious and if you are saying these to be funny, you need to stop. But if there's no pattern, I would believe the kid and speak up about it.

I believe your child could be telling the truth. I have known many unprofessional and/or crazy teachers over the years I have worked in schools, I think they tend to be more common in high schools.

NP: I agree kids can be unreliable narrators if it is a situation where they are in “trouble”. But when the situation has nothing whatsoever to do with them- or a close friend? Far less likely. My youngest (of 4) just started high school and the stories they have come home with over the years about SOME teachers (certainly not all, or even the majority of teachers) have been crazy. I have never contacted admin as it has never directly involved any of my own children. Also- at the high school level- I expect my kids to learn to deal with all sorts of personalities (and generally focus on their work and mind their own business). There are absolutely HS teachers who are controversial/inappropriate/too colorful/over familiar with students in various ways. And that is putting it politely. Does that mean it applies to you? Nope.
