You think the US Dept of Ed program in place since the 60s with awards ceremonies given at the white house by the prez is a gimmick? also not sure how it's arbitrary - do you even know what the criteria is to get invited to it? |
what about it? go make your own thread if you have questions about other things pls |

My kid was invited to apply. We are guessing that for most students it's because of a single sitting very high SAT score and/or a very high ACT score. Students from our area who have won the award have had outstanding extracurriculars at a truly extraordinary level in addition to high academic rigor and excellent test scores. |
Yes, most invitations are based on very high single-sitting test scores. There are two awardees from each state, regardless of state population, so if you come from a state where few people care about this award, and especially if it’s a small state like DC (which is a “state” for these purposes), you don’t need to be as impressive to win it. |
Many states have two awardees, but some states have more: https://www.ed.gov/media/document/2025-us-presidential-scholars-roster-112395.pdf |
| Is the trip to DC no longer part of it? It’s just an “honor”? |
| I know the track record of accomplishments of my nephew and my son. I know the kinds of offers they get and the careers that they have had. This is not to suggest that others do not perform at similarly high levels or that these awards are the only reason, but i believe that they are more likely to be considered. |
LOL, we are in DC (it's right there in the title). |
It's laughable that you think that DC is just any small state. |
| My DC received an invitation and we talked about it and DC will not be pursuing the application. The odds of getting selected are extremely low (less than the odds of admission at Harvard) and there's no scholarship (nor trip to DC) tied to it, so the juice is not worth the squeeze. |
My DC decided the same. |
I'll leave it up to my child, but we're not going to be pushing for it. To be honest, his strongest attributes are his test scores and class-related work; his extra-curriculars have been good learning experiences, but they aren't going to impress anyone reviewing the application. |
Huh? I'm the OP and we're not from DC. |
woke and short-sited; President is elected every four years - but you know that. |
