Is the US Presidential Scholars Program worth applying to?

I guess you already knew everything once you were born. Stop being an a-hole. Feel sorry for your kids.

What about the National Society of High School Honors Students?

I was a Presidential Scholar in the 90s. It was a lot of fun going to the in-person recognition week in DC, but it does not seem to be in person anymore. I met so many great friends there, who went to my college as well (HYP) but I think the program changed a lot.

Is there a way to find out if the DC trip still happens?

I would check with your state department of education. Or other states. (It tends to be a bigger deal in smaller states, so maybe start with Wyoming and work your way up.)

My nephew was a presidential scholar in the 90s and it was an amazing honor. He is from Chicago and won for the state of Illinois. These types of honors are highly selective and can be on your resume for job applications post university and help you to stand out among other applicants. It’s not just a ticket to college. My son won a similarly prestigious award (Regeneron) and it has helped him with graduate school admission and in his career. These are very impressive accomplishments.

This was a while ago, but HS BF, who was admitted to a number of Ivies, Cal Tech, and MIT, still applied to the program and was one of the lucky chosen. They attended a ceremony in DC, etc. He enjoyed meeting peers, etc. He ended up not going into academia, but that was part of the rationale for why he applied when he was 18.

Lots of folks are invited to apply but generally the two selected per state are truly outstanding - much more than just great grades, test scores, and ECs. For example, he was on the US International Mathematical Olympiad team and nailed some other state and national maths awards. One of our DCs was an exceptional student, even won awards at city and state competitions as part of their TT HS math team. Neither our DC nor any of their team mates were by any stretch in the running for the IMO team when in HS.

It seems unlikely. The trip used to be in June, but the timing info on the presidential scholar website says names will be published in the summer. They announced class of 2025 scholars in September.

How do you get invited to apply? SAT scores? If so, which year's score? And, how does the program know about your score?

No it's not. It's an arbitrary gimmick.

I don't like Trump either, but let's keep politics out of this. The program was started in the 60s, so it's not a Trump thing.

It's a Trump thing currently.

How do you know?

People who hire for science and technology are exactly the people who know Regeneron doesn't mean anything.
