What do MS courses look like on HS transcript?

Anonymous
I have a copy of my seniors HS transcript because I asked for it last fall before it got sent to colleges

Some of PPs are incorrect as it does have ALL HS classes in taken in MS. In fact this is at the very top.

It is correct hat these classes won't figure into the GPA if not helpful.

It is up to colleges whether they consider these grades or not. I would suspect most are not concerned with MS grades but they will be on the transcript.

Hope ths helps.

The layout of the middle school and high school grades is identical and in order of grade (eg if your first class you took for HS credit was in sixth grade, the sixth grade section is the first section listed on the transcript).

Everything is identical in appearance to the HS grades except the sections for MS grades are smaller because there are less relevant classes to list.

The above is correct for transcripts. It very clearly shows Grade 6, 7, and 8 courses in their own sections, and it lists the MS school name as well as the academic year each grade corresponds with. Then, immediately below are the sections for Grade 9, 10, 11, and 12, using the same format, only there are many more lines in each section because every class is a HS class.

Okay, thanks. So the handful of HS-credit middle school grades are the very first thing the admissions officers see on the transcript? That's kind of nerve-wracking... feels like it would be hard for them to ignore Bs and Cs there even if they claim that middle school grades don't matter to them.

Most colleges recalculate GPAs themselves. Most do not consider any courses taken in MS and also do not consider things like PE, art or other non-academic electives. Most do not weight grades. Many have a different "score" for rigor where the difficulty of classes is taken into account.

Some admissions officers see the actual transcript, others have students report using STAR or something different where they pull the data they are interested in and have each student's file look more consistent. High volume schools do not have the time to comb through the files of kids from thousands of different high schools to find the information they are interested in, instead they use something to assimilate the information so that it's in the same place for each student being considered.

I am looking at my child’s transcript and it does not differentiate in any way, and it does not list either the grade level or the name of the middle school. The middle school classes listed (math, languages) are right at the top and includes the year taken - so I guess an AO could figure it out by the year. It’s not ideal. My kid got lots of Bs in those MS classes and mostly As in HS.

That’s not the transcript. You are looking at the SGGCR. The transcript is different.

No one said it didn’t. There is some confusion between the transcript which lists all classes grouped by grade when taken, which clearly highlights which are in middle school, and the SGGCR which lists classes by subject area and includes middle school classes and the date taken but does not explicitly identify that they were taken in middle still.

Ah, that’s right. Thank you for clarifying.

Seems like things have changed recently as for my kids MS always counted in your gpa...but can you still retake a ms class to bring up the grade. My son did this for a C in Spanish. It was good for his learning too...much readier for later classes.

The rules changed about 10 years ago. Before that MS grades were all included in the GPA, then they first changed it so that students/parents could request to have MS grades excluded, then they changed it again so that the system automatically includes MS grades if they'll improve the GPA and excludes them if not.

- Transcript list all HS courses by grade taken.
- MS grades only included in GPAs if they improve the GPA.
- Some colleges recalculate a students GPA, usually the one that have a core set of course content they care about. Honestly, this is not something to focus on.
-SGCCR does not appear for students until after first semester of HS and then ever semester thereafter.
- Yes a kid can still get accepted to a good college with a C.🙄 Also, no one know what you define as a good college.

NP. If my kid gets a B in Algebra in 7th grade, can they repeat it? Or is that not recommended?

This is the important question - what do colleges do with this info in the admissions process? Most colleges take the unweighted grades and apply their own internal weighting and scoring system. They usually could care less what the high school’s GPA calculation is. If you are concerned about this, once you confirm that the grades go on the transcript, you should contact some colleges and see if they factor those grades into their analysis. Hopefully they will tell you!
