what is wrong with modern kids and no motivation to shovel?

What’s wrong with you OP thinking that “no kids” have the motivation to shovel?

Why do you think your experience is indicative of the universe of teens?

There are two active threads in the teen/tween forum that talk about shoveling teens, including one that talks about the going rate.

Where were you?

My teen is babysitting for a family who work from home but their kids can’t get to daycare.

Maybe they’re working, but they aren’t doing the work you want them to do?

Our Silver Spring neighborhood is very lucky to have teens out there doing this. My husband could do it but with a heart issue it is a win-win to pay the teens and have our drive and walkway cleared. So appreciate them.

This was also an unusually nasty storm with the ice making things heavy. Much harder to shovel.

My teen earned over $200 shoveling snow the last couple days - it was hard work!

$40 for at least a couple of hours hacking through ice. Yeah, I wouldn’t let my kid take that job.

Long list of teens wanting to shove in my MoCo neighborhood.

You live in the wrong place. Plenty of teen shovelers where I am.

There are definitely kids offering to shovel in my neighborhood!

Now I'm reading in DC that it is a sidewalk apocalypse because no one shoveled their walkways. It is too late now because it is packed down into ice, but where are the kids going door to door to make loot? It was a goldmine opportunity if they went out and made some effort. They even had multiple rounds of opportunity for shoveling due to the hours of snowfall and days off from school. I bet they could have easily made $2000 going door to door all day.

What happened to modern kids? Parent too scared? Or are they completely demotivated because they're stuck on their screens the whole time scrolling TikTok? It is great exercise too.

Because snow shoveling prices haven't kept pace. No one is going to spend an hour shoveling for $20.

So charge $40/h.

I would have paid a kid $40 to do our sidewalk. Probably 20 minutes of work = $120/h.

Omg, my poor teen is getting great exercise, both cardiovascular and resistance training. Oh the humanity! They're much better off inside sitting on the phone all day!

Teaching them the value of hard work!

How does your teen get spending money?

+1

We have crews of high school boys with snow blowers and shovels scheduling everyone up. They have pretty high rates but they seem to be worth it, making bank. Venmo.

Our neighborhood had barrage of kids advertising services and their schedules were full on days 1 and 2.
