Getting a Passport Card, but don't want to mail in Passport Book

Anonymous
Im here in Minnesota. I want clarify that people are being detained even if they have proof of citizenship. They detain and then verify after. It doesn’t matter to them. All of this is filmed. We have the proof. But there is NOTHING we can do! There is no regard to law!

It is way worse here than any news will report.

I am so sorry, and I am outraged.

If you are not leaving the country, doesn’t that serve the purpose of ID?

Have you been seeing the news? I am a US citizen who is also person of color and don't want to risk being sent to Uganda by ignorant incompetent ICE agents.

Your fear is valid, but a REAL ID should also prove citizenship. I’m not sure a passport card adds to that.

Sadly, this is true. Stupidity, ignorance, and racist attitudes mean that ICE agents probably don't know what a passport card is, either.

DP I don’t think a real id proves citizenship

correct - VA REAL ID does not, but most other states' do.

This is what the Virginia DMV site says:

“Legal presence means that a person is a U.S. citizen, a legal permanent resident of the U.S. or is legally authorized to be in the U.S. in an eligible immigration status”

If you have a real ID then you had to show documentation that you are legally present in Virginia. Any government official who sees a Real ID would know that.

ICE has a lot of people who barely finished high school.

and know it’s NOT proof of citizenship.

No, it is not, but it is proof that the holder is legally present in the country.

People who are legally present in the country are being deported.

For VA, getting a state-issued Real ID requires proof that one is legally resident in the US and separately also proof (utility bill) that one actually resides in Virginia.

For example, a Permanent Resident can get a Real ID in Virginia.

I am unclear how it works in other states.

It's the same in every state, the requirements are the same nationally, that's the entire point.

DP. Also a person of color here and I just carry my passport book with me. But I hear that ICE just ignores that and detains people anyway. Scary times.

False. From Google AI search:
Varying State Policies:
Permissive: States like Pennsylvania and Virginia allow Green Card holders to get standard REAL IDs.
Restrictive: Colorado and Kentucky issue REAL IDs only to citizens and permanent residents, excluding other visa holders.
Limited Term: Some states issue REAL IDs that expire with your immigration status (e.g., an expiring Green Card), often marked as "limited term".

That's kind of funny because the bolded are the same thing, but the summary makes it seem like they are different. AI fantastic as always.

Under FAQ 1

Yes. In most cases when you renew by mail, we will return the old passport to you. The old passport may not arrive for up to four weeks after you receive your new passport.

If you renew online, keep your most recent passport and do not send it to us.

But you can only renew online in certain situations. Website states that renew exactly what you had previously. So you can renew passport book if had passport book. You cannot renew online if you want to add passport card if you’ve never had a passport card.

The problem is that either this time of idiocy ends soon, and having extra ID won’t be necessary, or the Trumpies move on to killing us based on political affiliation, without much regard to immigration status, and having extra ID won’t be especially helpful.

so this person has no other proof of citizenship except for their passport? did they burn their birth certificate or nationalization papers? Either way the only citizens detained by Ice are those that can't speak english or don't cooperate to confirm their identiy.

Right, or the elderly ones who are US citizens, and ICE breaks into their house, and doesn't allow them to show their citizenship documents before walking them out of the house in their underwear in 20 degree weather.

This is all off-topic now.
