If you are not leaving the country, doesn’t that serve the purpose of ID?

Have you been seeing the news? I am a US citizen who is also person of color and don't want to risk being sent to Uganda by ignorant incompetent ICE agents.

Your fear is valid, but a REAL ID should also prove citizenship. I’m not sure a passport card adds to that.

Citizens have offered up passports but still were detained.

Sadly, this is true. Stupidity, ignorance, and racist attitudes mean that ICE agents probably don't know what a passport card is, either.

DP I don’t think a real id proves citizenship

correct - VA REAL ID does not, but most other states' do.

When DH renewed his passport online he still had to mail in the old one.

Was it recent? I did not need to mail my passport in. That said I think they cancel the old one, but it should still serve as a valid form of citizenship.

My online renewal was quick—took 7-10 days to receive.

This is what the Virginia DMV site says:

“Legal presence means that a person is a U.S. citizen, a legal permanent resident of the U.S. or is legally authorized to be in the U.S. in an eligible immigration status”

If you have a real ID then you had to show documentation that you are legally present in Virginia. Any government official who sees a Real ID would know that.

DP here. I got a new passport last year and I had to mail my old passport in.

Under FAQ 1

Yes. In most cases when you renew by mail, we will return the old passport to you. The old passport may not arrive for up to four weeks after you receive your new passport.

If you renew online, keep your most recent passport and do not send it to us.

No, it is not, but it is proof that the holder is legally present in the country.

Wow, this is new! Anybody know when they changed this? I really disliked having to send my passport in to renew.

This is great, but my passport does not expire any time within the next year, so it is not eligible for renewal.

Oh, sorry—I didn’t remember the expiration requirement.

I’m so sorry that this is something you have to worry about. It truly sucks.

The problem is that either this time of idiocy ends soon, and having extra ID won’t be necessary, or the Trumpies move on to killing us based on political affiliation, without much regard to immigration status, and having extra ID won’t be especially helpful.

This is why I didn’t do it for my kid who really needed the waterproof passport card for an international water trip where they were crossing borders in a canoe. The DOS is such a crap show now I didn’t trust them to actually turn it around in any sort of reasonable time so I just sent him with the regular passport in two ziplocks.

Definitely a new update in the last 12 months that you don’t have to send the old one in.
