Getting a Passport Card, but don't want to mail in Passport Book

I already own a Passport Book, but want to have a Passport Card to carry with me. Is there any way to get a Passport Card without having to mail in my Passport Book? The State Dept website says that if you want a Passport Card, but already are in possession of a valid Passport Book, you should apply for a "Renewal" - but this requires mailing in your Passport Book, which will then be mailed back to you in about a month. I do not want to be without my Passport Book for a month.
Presumably, there are many other people like me nowadays who are finding themselves in a similar situation. I've checked Reddit, etc., but was wondering if anyone here has managed to get a Passport Card recently without having to mail in their Passport Book? What did you do? |

| I got a passport card recently without sending in my passport book but I can't remember how. Maybe I sent in an old passport card? Can't remember. |

| I replied to the other thread. One way, albeit not cost effective, would be to do a renewal of your passport. You could get a new passport and card without surrendering your current passport. But depending on the circumstance that extra expense might be warranted. |

Have you been seeing the news? I am a US citizen who is also person of color and don't want to risk being sent to Uganda by ignorant incompetent ICE agents. |

Your fear is valid, but a REAL ID should also prove citizenship. I’m not sure a passport card adds to that. |

Sadly, this is true. Stupidity, ignorance, and racist attitudes mean that ICE agents probably don't know what a passport card is, either. |
