What don't you like about the ranch style house?

The 3 BRs in our particular layout are clustered at the end of the hallway. So I’m on top of my kids where they’d have more breathing room if we were at opposite ends of a second floor.

My kids are 3, 5, 9, 11 and 13. We are never lonely, that’s for sure. I like older homes, especially 4 squares

I hate a split floor plan like that. No privacy for adults!

That's completely absurd. I grew up in a family of 5 in a 2,000sf house and it was more than adequate.

Perhaps in the US. Not so realistic in most parts of the world.

I think most posters here are in the US.

The question wasn't "minimally adequate."

5 people in a 2000 sq foot house sounds incredibly right. That's about what I had growing up- except we had a quasi-finished basement that wasn't included in that. The bedrooms were uncomfortably small, too.

And you need bigger as you age, last four 7,000 sf homes on my block bought by younger empty Nestor’s.

Some holiday weeks I see 8-12 cars as they all come home with friends, gf, bf or is married grandkids

It must be exhausting to be constantly figuring out how to work your summer house into every conversation.

I found this interesting since there have been recent articles out about how smaller homes lead to happier lives. I can see the value of smaller homes in terms of not being house poor and embracing the size house you have. However I think 4000 sq ft is really a perfect size house for a family of 5. I wouldn't want anything bigger. I definitely don't see the value of a 10,000+ sq ft house.

I grew up in a family of 5 in a 6k sw ft house which was a great amount of space but you don’t see me starting a post about it.

It really all depends on how functional the space is. We're a family of 4 in 3500 square feet. The formal living room and family room never gets used. We're all either in the kitchen or the bonus room where we watch TV and movies.

We’re a family of 5 and two dogs in a 2800 sq ft house. We use every room but I look forward to returning to a smaller house, it’s a lot to maintain even with a cleaner and gardener. I haven’t wished for bigger than this and we’re hoping to downsize a little when we’re empty nesters soon.

800-900 sf. 1-2 bedrooms. That's all we need.

3 kids + au pair in a 3,200sqf home and it seems perfect. The floor plan is great and we have plenty of room to host visitors.

Newly empty nesters here and beginning to think about downsizing. We're in 3800 square feet now (including semi-finished basement), and about half that would be plenty.

2900 sf for a family of 3. I could use one more bedroom and perhaps a slightly larger living room or outdoor area. So, 3500-4000 would be my max. I like being able to clean it all.

It depends on the layout.

1300 and it’s perfect for us as DINKs but will get small once we add kids. Master is separated from the other bedrooms nicely with an en-suite bath and MASSIVE master closet which makes that space amazingly functional but the other bedrooms branch off the dining room which is funky to walk right out of those bedrooms into the dining space.
