| We moved from a 2600 sq ft house to a 4000 sq ft house (there are 5 of us and a big dog) and it has been amazing. I found this interesting since there have been recent articles out about how smaller homes lead to happier lives. I can see the value of smaller homes in terms of not being house poor and embracing the size house you have. However I think 4000 sq ft is really a perfect size house for a family of 5. I wouldn't want anything bigger. I definitely don't see the value of a 10,000+ sq ft house. |
| Ours is listed at 1,550 sq ft, but I don’t think that includes the lower level. It was a good size for 3 of us, but we could use some things like larger closets, a covered space for two cars, and a larger master bathroom. Now that there are two of us in the house we could easily go smaller, especially with better storage space. |
| People are like gas - we expand to fill the space we’re in. |
| 2900 sq ft for 3 of us, plus basement. Feels luxurious and can’t imagine the upkeep on anything bigger being worth it. |
| For a family size of n, the calculation is 500*n+500. So for 5 people, you would need at at least 3000 sq feet. |
Perhaps in the US. Not so realistic in most parts of the world. |
This. What a weird post. |
| We are 7 in a 3 BR ranch. Looking for a 2600 sq ft house with a better layout. |
| Family of four with a 2,000 SF house and a 2,500 SF summer house. 2,500 is great but 3,000 would be ideal. |
| Raised 3 kids in 1300 sq feet. That was tight at times, I think the ideal would be 2000. Now there is just one kid left at home, and that 1300 sq feet would be perfect if I had a space to fit a bigger dining table. |
| 6500-7500 family of 4, the rooms are bigger and we have extras like 3 car garage, room for extended family to visit etc |

We've got 3 kids and 2000 sq ft and I think it's perfect.
I like that a smaller house forces you to be a bit more intentional about stuff. Like, we just went through all the kids trucks and got rid of a bunch so we'd have room in the closet for the some of their new Christmas toys. If we had a bigger house, we wouldn't bother, and we'd be sitting on TONS of toys that no one really wants and wouldn't miss. |
What don't you like about the ranch style house? |
Stop having kids Mr. & Mrs. Rabbit |

Raised our kids in 4000 sq ft. Lots of room for entertaining and having family and friends stay for extended periods.Wonderful.
Empty nesting house is 1800 sq feet and perfect for two. 1000 sq ft guest house set up for when children and grandchildren visit. May add a bunk house depending on final grandchildren count. |
