The "ugly" part is that the initial screen had a blue banner that said "Congratulations" and then included information for an admitted students zoom call. But below that was a link to an official letter that said my kid was deferred. After my kid emailed the admissions email address, kid received an email saying that the Congratulations message was a mistake and my kid was deferred not accepted.

This is an awful mistake. I know this will sound unreasonable to many but my feeling is when schools make this egregious of an error, the student should be admitted.

My nephew was rejected by Duke years ago. It was his dream school as his dad had attended and was very active volunteering his time for interviews. He absolutely had the GPA and SAT, was valedictorian, had the ECs and won multiple awards. He was crushed. It’s so brutal. With that said, he ended up at a wonderful school where he was extremely happy. There just aren’t enough spots.

DC private. Legacy but also very top of the class. They could have chosen HYP. (Not my kid)

Not legacy and no hooks. We did not have a lot of expectations going in.

I agree in principle but my guess is the deferral numbers are too high to admit all of them. Did your brother continue to interview? I doubt I would have, given how obviously qualified his kid was for admission. If the kid was weaker, I would have understood.

Congratulations to anyone admitted to Duke. What a great school.

Our kids would not have gotten in. Not in a million years. They got into UVA in state, though, and went there. In hindsight, I'm glad we didn't have to make the choice. I'm sure they would have wanted to go to Duke, and I wouldn't have blamed them, but there's no way of ever convincing me that it's worth the extra money for anyone who doesn't have money to burn.

It is worth the money. Look at the National Brand image Duke has( lot of foundation provided by Coach K). The life long connections provided by Duke is similar to HYP and has been for 50’years. Difference between Dukevznd HYP is Duke name is a staple on Main Street small town America as well as boardrooms on Wall Street. It is the go to place right now and doesn’t have the baggage of cold, protest prone Ivies.

FCPS male - rejected. IB school, 4.4 WGPA, 35 ACT, sports team captain, other clubs, outside job. Engineering major. Was not expecting an admit, but wanted to take a shot. Naviance indicates no acceptances from our HS in the data.

For those that didn't get in, DO NOT WORRY. You will find that great school that wants you and you will thrive. My kid did not apply to Duke and is committed to their choice 1. Duke is a great school but it is among many greats so chin up and move forward!

4.8, 16 APs, 2 sport captain, part time job, many ECs, several leadership roles, TO (1490), fluent in 3 languages, CERT certified (community emergency response team-basically trained to react in an emergency. Tip 5% in class (they do not rank). NIH internship. Also received the congratulations email that turned into a rejection. Can’t describe how upset we all were. Eff Duke.
