Once those liberal women meet a tall, handsome Texan in tight jeans, boots, and a cowboy hat, they change their views. |

Some of you need to either take your meds, get a grip, or find a life, or probably all three.
There are millions more Dems in Texas than in either MD or VA. And they are surviving just fine and even, gasp, happily. OP will be fine. |

I think Tarrytown is too close in to be like McLean, but it is a top neighborhood. The Austin Country Club area might be more like McLean given that it has bigger, expensive houses and farther away from downtown. And now that so much has been developed just north of there, it no longer feels so far out.
That said, I don't think you can get much of anything in either of those areas for 1 - 1.5mm. What really matters is where is spouse who is getting this job working. |
| Not sure I would move to Texas for any reason right now OP, even Austin. If the real estate market collapses there it's going to take a while for it to come back. |

You need to visit and see if you like it. I found Austin to be completely underwhelming. I don't get the appeal.
Check out the way you will be taxed there. They have had grid failure. The infrastructure in the state has not kept up with the growth. It's hot and humid. |
| You do realize the Bush family is from Texas, right? |
|
OP here, I guess I shouldn't be, but I'm surprised by the crazy-pants responses to such a mild inquiry.
Jeff. Feel free to remove this thread. |
dp, and? Trump's family are from NY. So what of it? And I'm not a huge fan of TX in general, though DC had an internship in Austin this past summer and had fun. |
| OP, go and visit. Most on here know nothing about TX. |
| Austin is a very cool city - visit and see! I would move there in a heartbeat and leave the miserable people in the DMV. Property taxes are crazy. |

Can anyone talk to me about high schools, neighborhoods and country clubs? There are 3 main school districts in Austin: AISD - main urban school district. High schools include Austin High which is downtown and very diverse and also where all of the old school Austin $$ Tarrytown and Pemberton kids go if they don't go to privates. The school itself is meh but I love it for reasons that are hard to explain to transplants. More suburban HS are Bowie (Circle C neighborhood), Anderson (has IB) in the NW Hills area. Eanes ISD in the Westlake area of Austin. Eanes has one huge high school - Westlake HS. It is considered very good academically and in sports. One of the best in the state. Lake Travis ISD and it is sort of like Westlake though a little less money. Lake Travis HS reflects that. A little cheesier/suburban if you will. Is there a well-regarded, academically focused, private school in Austin or surrounds? St. Andrews, St. Stephens, Griffin (not traditional) are the 'best'. Also there is Trinity, Regents, St. Michaels which are fine, and then numerous other smaller ones. Or do most people go to public schools? I mean yes most go to publics just purely in numbers but the privates offer advantages just like privates anywhere (smaller, better college help, parent community.) we aren't sure if our last remaining child at home will want to do his last year at his private school here, boarding school, or at school in Texas. I mean I would not want to transfer my kid for his senior year so the above would be moot. Housing could be condo/townhouse or a SFH, but would like to keep the budget between $1-1.5mill. You could find something nice zoned for Bowie or Anderson in AISD at that price but they are in different parts of town and it really depends on the work commute. Could also find something nice in Lake Travis but so far out. Would be harder in Westlake. Would like to join a country club for tennis, golf is not a requirement. Westwood mentioned above is old school and you have to be connected. I would maybe look at River Place (North) or The Hills in Lakeway (Lake Travis). ACC and Barton Creek and Westlake are also difficult for unconnected transplants. What would be a good neighborhood for an older family who likes to run, isn't particularly 'cool', and doesn't know ANYONE in the city? Now that I have written all of this I realize I need to know if this job involves a daily commute or is half remote or whatever. There are plenty of master planned developments that could work like Circle C, Avery Ranch, etc. Just need more info. |
Dallas sux. Austin is way better with actual trees, lakes, rivers, hill country, people, fun college town. Both are too hot three mos of the year. But at least Austin has dirt that tall trees can grow in. I hated my 10 years in dallas. And we were by SMU and a super “nice expensive neighborhood.” Ugliest place I ever lived, and I lived in three countries and 7 other major MSAs in America. |
| It's very hot and humid. |
And the Clintons live in New York. So you wouldn't move there? |
